Former Vice President and ADC chieftain, Atiku Abubakar, has told delegates of the ADC has firmly urged the party to prioritise competence and national reach over sentiments and social media popularity.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, the former Vice President dismissed social media enthusiasm as an insufficient test for the presidency.
Atiku also stressed that the party must field its strongest candidate to defeat President Bola Tinubu.

He further noted that with Nigeria mired in economic hardship, mounting debts, insecurity and institutional decay, the ADC cannot afford the luxury of fielding an untested candidate.
He said, “This is not a season for political experimentation. Nigeria cannot afford a learning-on-the-job presidency.”
Meanwhile, he insisted that structures, strategy, and governing capacity — not digital noise — determine presidential campaigns, as he criticised the growing excitement surrounding some candidates.
He said, “At a time when Nigeria is bleeding from every pore, crippled by economic hardship, insecurity, rising debt, institutional failure, and deepening hopelessness, the question before the ADC is simple: who has the capacity not merely to campaign, but to govern effectively from day one?

Furthermore, Atiku Abubakar described the decision before ADC delegates as a historic responsibility that goes beyond ordinary political calculations, considering the scale of Nigeria’s current crisis.
BACKSTORY…
Atiku’s statement comes only few days after the ADC carried out it screening for presidential aspirants ahead of the 2027 election.
Recall that the African Democratic Congress screened former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former FSB International Bank Managing Director Mohammed Hayatu-Deen on Wednesday ahead of its presidential primary.
However, the former vice president only said, “The screening went well,” declining to talk in-depth with reporters following the exercise.
