Florence Ajimobi Assumes Office as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria

Florence Ajimobi has arrived in Vienna to officially begin her duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria and international organisations based in the city.

Ajimobi disclosed her arrival in a Facebook post on Friday, revealing that she was welcomed at the VIP section of Vienna International Airport by the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Nigerian Embassy and Permanent Mission, Muyiwa Onifade, along with embassy officials and members of the Nigerian community in Austria.

She noted that the reception team also included home-based officers, local staff, and representatives from various Nigerian community associations in Austria, such as the Oduduwa Group, Igbo Cultural Group, Nigeria-Austria Friendship Group, the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, and Nigerian students living in the country.

Florence Ajimobi expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and reaffirmed her commitment to deepening diplomatic ties and strengthening cooperation between Nigeria and Austria.

She said she looks forward to building on the existing relationship between both countries and promoting stronger bilateral engagement.

Her appointment follows the submission of 32 ambassadorial nominees by President Bola Tinubu to the Senate in November 2025 for confirmation.

The list included 17 non-career ambassadors and 15 career diplomats nominated for various countries and international organisations regarded as important to Nigeria’s foreign policy and diplomatic interests.

BACKSTORY:

The appointment of new ambassadors forms part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to strengthen its diplomatic presence and deepen bilateral relations with key countries and international organisations around the world.

In November 2025, President Bola Tinubu submitted a list of ambassadorial nominees to the Senate as part of moves to reposition Nigeria’s foreign missions and improve the country’s global engagement.

Among the nominations were both career diplomats and non-career appointees expected to represent Nigeria’s interests in strategic countries and multilateral institutions.

Vienna remains a major diplomatic hub, hosting several important international organisations, making Nigeria’s representation there significant for issues relating to international cooperation, trade, security, and global development.
