The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority(LASTMA), working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, successfully prevented what could have escalated into a major fire outbreak after a leaking mini gas tanker caught fire at Owode Elede along Ikorodu Road on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when a six-tyre gas tanker developed a mechanical fault while moving through the Owode Elede corridor toward Ikorodu.
According to LASTMA, emergency responders discovered a compressed gas leak while inspecting the faulty tanker, and the leaked gas later ignited, sparking a fire around the vehicle.
The agency said its Rescue and Recovery Team immediately responded to the scene, working together with fire service personnel to bring the situation under control.
It noted that the swift and coordinated response helped prevent the flames from spreading into a larger inferno that could have posed serious risks to lives, properties, and road infrastructure in the area.
To minimise traffic disruption during the operation, LASTMA officials created an alternative route by combining one functional lane with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor to maintain traffic flow.
The agency said the arrangement ensured smooth and orderly vehicular movement despite the ongoing rescue and firefighting efforts.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA praised the quick intervention and teamwork of all emergency responders, describing their actions as vital in averting a potentially severe disaster.
He also advised motorists to remain vigilant, obey traffic regulations, and cooperate with emergency officials whenever such incidents occur.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while maintaining free flow of traffic and delivering prompt emergency response across Lagos State’s road network.
