Reports of a young gay guy who died after allegedly being shoved from a two-story building by homophobic males in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, have devastated the LGBTQ+ community in Nigeria.
Eyewitness reports claim that the victim was attacked by a group of males who targeted him due to his sexual orientation. The altercation swiftly descended into violence, resulting in the tragic event that has since caused indignation and sadness on social media.
Gay pastor, Jide Macaulay, who shared the sad story online, said the deceased had been lured to the apartment by homophobic men who then attacked him and then pushed him from the building. Macaulay said the deceased was rushed to the hospital but d!ed from the injuries he sustained on his spinal cord.
Macaulay said that the LGBT community in Nigeria has experienced two homophobic attacks in the past two weeks.
Human rights organisations and activists have denounced the crime, calling it a heartbreaking reminder of the risks LGBTQ+ people in Nigeria face. They are demanding that justice be done for the young guy whose life was taken by hate and that a comprehensive investigation be conducted.
