Gunmen kill 3 in Kwara worshippers, abduct 15 worshippers

The Kwara State Police Command has verified the killing of three worshippers and the abduction of 15 others following a deadly attack by gunmen at a prayer ground in Ekiti Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson of the Kwara police command, also added that the gunmen stormed the prayer ground around 8pm while worshippers were attending a vigil.

Additionally, the police noted that the assailants opened fire sporadically, killing three people before whisking away 15 worshippers to an unknown destination.

The statement reads, “The Kwara State Police Command strongly condemns the gruesome attack, killing, and abduction of innocent worshippers by armed criminals at Ori-Oke Ajaiye, located on the outskirts of Ikiran Village in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.”

While there is widespread panic and concerns over security in the state and the nation at large, the police has assured residents of Ekiti LGA and the entire state that vigorous efforts, including bush combing, intelligence gathering, and coordinated security operations, are ongoing to track down the assailants and bring them to justice.

Meanwhile, the incident comes amid heightened attacks on communities across Kwara state and rising security concerns in the south-west following recent attacks in parts of Oyo state.

Recall that on May 16, gunmen on motorcycles stormed villages in the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis of Oriire, Ogbomoso, kidnapping personnel and kids from Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community High School in Ahoro-Esiele, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele.

The attackers killed an assistant headmaster identified as Joel Adesiyan and a commercial motorcyclist, sparking outrage across the country.

More recently, yesterday May 23, gunmen suspected to be Fulani terrorists also launched fresh attacks on communities in Plateau State, consequently killing 3.
