Sokoto South Senator Aminu Tambuwal has explained his decision to withdraw from the 2027 senatorial race, saying it was driven by his commitment to encouraging younger politicians rather than any internal disagreement within the African Democratic Congress.

Tambuwal made the clarification during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Friday, stressing that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as a sign of division within the party.

Following his exit, former House of Representatives Speaker Faruk Yabo was adopted as the consensus candidate of the ADC for the senatorial seat.

The former governor of Sokoto State also recalled his past political move during the 2023 presidential race, where he stepped down from the Peoples Democratic Party primary in support of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He further stated that he remains committed to supporting the party’s campaigns in Sokoto State and helping to mobilize voters for the ADC.

According to Tambuwal, there are no cracks within the party, adding that his focus is on promoting youth participation and strengthening leadership development within the political space.

Backstory…

Sokoto South Senator Aminu Tambuwal has built a long political reputation as one of Nigeria’s key figures, having served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as Governor of Sokoto State before moving into the Senate.

His recent decision to withdraw from the 2027 senatorial race fits into a pattern of political positioning and mentorship he has often emphasized in his career. Over the years, Tambuwal has also been involved in major national political contests, including the 2023 presidential primary under the Peoples Democratic Party, where he stepped down in support of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

In the current development, his withdrawal from the Sokoto South senatorial race was followed by the endorsement of former House Speaker Faruk Yabo as the consensus candidate of the African Democratic Congress.

Tambuwal explained that his decision was not due to any internal crisis within the party, but rather part of his effort to encourage younger politicians and strengthen leadership succession in Nigerian politics.
