Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, has denied rumours that he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which served as his platform for political advancement, to join the Accord Party.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Governor Adeleke stated that although he adores the PDP, he must find a secure platform in order to run for reelection in 2026 due to the party’s ongoing problems.
Adeleke, who is now formally the Accord Party’s nominee for the August 2026 election, clarified that although he had attempted to address the PDP situation, it appeared to get worse over time.

“I love PDP, but with all the crises going on, you know about all these crises, I did my best, I tried, but everything seems to be falling apart every day. So, as a reasonable person, I had to make a decision and ask, ‘Where do I go from here?’” he said.
“That is why I decided to go to the Accord Party. It’s not true that I abandoned PDP. I love PDP, but I had to protect myself and protect my state because of the good work we have been doing, so that we can continue,” Adeleke added.
Additionally, he expressed confidence that political parties would have less of an impact on his reelection campaign, arguing that Osun State voters will choose him based more on his performance and personality than his party allegiance.

“I believe that the people love me in Osun State, so it is not all about parties now. Osun people are wise—they don’t judge you based on your party; they judge the person.
“What have you done? I have a track record, and that track record is what they will consider. Within three years, I know what we have achieved in our government, so it is about the person,” he said.
Governor Adeleke declared on Tuesday that he had joined the Accord Party in order to run for reelection in August of the next year.

He stated that weeks of discussion and engagement with opinion leaders and stakeholders preceded the decision.
Governor Adeleke was officially announced as the Accord Party’s candidate for Osun State governor in the 2026 election on Wednesday, one day after he announced his defection.
