Imran Wakili says Atiku Abubakar, African Democratic Congress may struggle to recover from alleged damage caused by Babachir Lawal

Political commentator Imran Wakili has claimed that the African Democratic Congress and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may struggle to recover from recent political setbacks allegedly linked to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

In a post shared on X on Thursday, Wakili alleged that Lawal’s actions contributed to the departure of several key political figures from the ADC, leaving the party significantly weakened.

According to him, the exits of figures such as Jibrilla Bindow, Ishaku Abbo, Aishatu Binani, and Murtala Nyako were tied to internal issues he blamed on Lawal.

Recall that Lawal resigned from the ADC last month, accusing the party of operating what he described as a “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also accused Atiku and his allies of pursuing ethnic and religious interests, arguing that Atiku’s emergence as a presidential candidate could ultimately boost the re-election chances of President Bola Tinubu.

BACKSTORY…

The remark by Imran Wakili comes amid rising internal tensions within the African Democratic Congress as political camps reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The crisis deepened after former SGF Babachir Lawal publicly resigned from the party, accusing it of compromising its internal processes and alleging plans that could undermine fair competition.

His exit sparked fresh debates over the party’s stability, especially as some influential northern politicians and former officeholders also began distancing themselves from the ADC.

For former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who remains one of the key opposition figures ahead of 2027, the internal shake-up has raised questions about the strength of his political base and the ability of the ADC to remain united as a viable platform.

Wakili’s comment reflects growing concerns that the fallout from Babachir’s departure may have weakened both Atiku’s influence within the party and the ADC’s wider political structure.
