Following the structural failure of a three-story residential building in the Alakija area of Lagos State, officials have confirmed two fatalities.
According to reports, the building, situated on Old Ojo Road near Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry expressway in Satellite Town, collapsed at about 11:37 am on Thursday.
The Lagos commissioner for information Gbenga Omotosho, earlier gave an update on the incident, noting that confirming that rescue teams had successfully pulled six survivors from the rubble.
Providing critical operational updates, Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, announced that search teams successfully pulled six more survivors from the rubble. This brings the total number of rescued individuals to 16.
According to Adeseye, medical teams immediately took custody of the survivors, who are now receiving urgent treatment for varying degrees of injuries. She also added that emergency responders have remained at the disaster site, working tirelessly to account for every missing person and restore stability to the area.
The statement reads in part, “Rescue efforts are still ongoing, and emergency responders remain on the scene, working tirelessly to ensure that all affected persons are accounted for.”
However, despite aggressive rescue effort, authorities are yet to determine the cause of the collapse.
The collapse triggered a multi-agency response involving the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and other emergency agencies.

Two Buildings Collapse In Rivers State
Exactly twenty four hours ago, a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, trapping an unspecified number of workers beneath the rubble.
To further worsen the case, this collapse comes exactly 24 hours after a different building in the iwofe axis oth the city gave way.

The incident occurred on Dr. Peter Odili Road near Eterna Filling Station in Port Harcourt, less than 24 hours after another building collapsed in the Iwofe area of the state capital, although that earlier incident did not result in any injuries.
According to an eyewitness who spoke with LEADERSHIP, the building gave way shortly after construction workers resumed work for the day.

In recent weeks, multiple incidents of building collapse and fire incidents in major cities the nation has surfaced. Recently, a building under construction in the Gudu axis of the FCT gave way.
This comes amid similar incidents in Lagos State. The repeated scenarios have raised strong concern about the quality of buildings across these states and how approval is granted for these substandard structures.
