Udenta Udenta alleges National Assembly of Nigeria is being used to amend Electoral Act in favour of Bola Tinubu ahead of 2027

Political analyst and founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy, Udenta Udenta, has alleged that the National Assembly is being used to amend the Electoral Act in a way that could favour President Bola Tinubu ahead of future elections.

Udenta made the claim on Thursday while speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.

He also questioned the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission, alleging that the commission halted party primaries on May 30 under suspicious circumstances.

According to him, since the start of Tinubu’s administration in 2023, there have been growing concerns about shrinking civic space, increased pressure on labour unions, and what he described as the use of legal institutions against political opponents.

Udenta further claimed that the current political environment reflects mounting pressure on opposition parties and Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system.

BACKSTORY…

The comment by Udenta Udenta comes amid ongoing debates over proposed amendments to the Electoral Act 2022 and growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.

There have been concerns from opposition figures and civil society groups over whether changes to the electoral law could alter the political landscape in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The remarks also follow recent controversies around party primaries and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission, with some opposition voices accusing the commission of actions they believe may affect internal party processes.

Udenta’s comments reflect broader concerns over Nigeria’s democratic space, electoral reforms, and the political manoeuvring already shaping the build-up to the 2027 presidential election.
