The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of its ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration by two weeks.
While officials originally slated the exercise to conclude on July 10, the new adjustmen pushes the final deadline to Friday, July 24, 2026
Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this on Friday night in Abuja.
Haruna also stated that the decision comes following a review of the exercise and feedback received from the commissions’s state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
He clarified that the Independent National Electoral Commission launched the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise on August 18, 2025, but subsequently extended the deadline to ensure no eligible citizen is left behind.
This extended grace period underscores the agency’s operational commitment to equity, guaranteeing that every eligible Nigerian enjoys a fair and reasonable opportunity to secure their spot on the official Register of Voters.
Providing further details, INEC also announced the introduction of a self-service online registration option for eligible first-time voters.
It added that the service would become available from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through its dedicated CVR portal, where a step-by-step guide would be provided.
The self-service option, according to INEC, will enable qualified persons to start and finish their voter registration—including biometric capture—using personal devices without having to go to an INEC office.
Backstory…
The extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise comes amid growing public interest in the 2027 general elections and repeated calls by civil society organisations, political parties and eligible Nigerians for more time to register.
Since the exercise commenced, thousands of prospective voters have reported challenges ranging from network glitches and overcrowding at registration centres to difficulties accessing registration services in remote communities. In response, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has continued to expand the use of technology to improve voter registration and reduce congestion.
