Members of the US House of Representatives have approved a war powers resolution seeking to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to launch military action without congressional approval. The lawmakers voted to end the Iran war.
Tuesday’s vote marked the third time the House had considered such a resolution, following earlier attempts in June and July.
With the vote coming just weeks before the November midterm elections, in which Democrats will seek to regain control of Congress from Republicans, it remains unclear whether the Senate will approve the measure.
Republican senators quickly reversed their positions the following day after Trump criticised them during a private lunch, despite the Senate having also passed a war powers resolution calling for an end to the conflict.
The White House opposed the June resolution, while the Senate has yet to take action on the July vote.
When Trump won a second term, he pledged to keep the US out of foreign conflicts.
However, the President has defended the war in Iran, arguing that it has weakeed the Asian country’s military capabilities.

The dispute began after President Donald Trump authorised US military action against Iran on February 28, 2026, alongside Israel.
As the Iran war continued beyond the initial period lawmakers expected, Democrats and some Republicans increasingly questioned whether the president could sustain military operations without explicit congressional authorisation.
The House’s earlier efforts in June and July also sought to compel the withdrawal of US forces from hostilities with Iran unless Congress authorised the action.
Neither measure ultimately stopped the military campaign. The Senate separately passed a similar resolution on its tenth attempt, but Republican senators reversed their position the following day after Trump criticised them during a private meeting.
