The University of Port Harcourt branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike over the incomplete payment of salaries and responsibility allowances to its members.
The union said it took the action after the university management failed to address its demands despite meeting with the union and assuring members that it would resolve the issues.
The branch also alleged that the university had excluded its members from the monthly payment of responsibility allowances made to members of other unions for more than two years.
ASUU Secretary at the University of Port Harcourt, Tarila Amakoromo, disclosed this in a statement sent to journalists on Thursday.
Amakoromo noted that during an emergency congress on Friday, September 11, 2026, the union gave the university administration 48 working hours, ending at midnight on Tuesday, September 15, to resolve the issues or risk an indefinite local strike supported by the union’s national body.
He added that the branch declared an indefinite strike following an emergency congress on Wednesday, September 16, after the university management failed to address the outstanding issues.
The statement read in part, “A strike action has been declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Port Harcourt Branch following the University Administration’s failure to address the demands of the Union.
“Recall that at its Emergency Congress held on Friday 11th September, 2026, Congress reached a Resolution on the following matters of urgent importance regarding salaries/emoluments of lecturers:
“Incomplete payment of lecturers’ three months’ (June, July & August, 2026) salary. Incomplete payment of Responsibility Allowances to lecturers.
“Non-payment of Responsibility Allowance to members under CONMESS & CONHESS (lecturers in the School of Health Sciences).

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) previously threatened to embark on a nationwide strike across public universities if federal and state authorities fail to address its outstanding demands.
ASUU President Christopher Piwuna issued the warning in a statement released last Friday.
The union cautioned that industrial action could resume without prior notice, citing the government’s failure to fully implement the December 2025 agreement
Additional grievances raised by the union include the non-remittance of billions of naira in withheld deductions from lecturers’ salaries.
The warning came following an emergency National Executive Council meeting convened by the union at the University of Abuja.
