Former president Goodluck Jonathan said he would consult widely before deciding whether to contest the 2027 presidential election, stressing that seeking Nigeria’s highest office “is not a computer game.”
Speaking on Thursday, Jonathan told a group of young people who had come to his Abuja office to urge him to enter the race that he had taken note of their request but would not make a political choice without extensive deliberation.
His comments coincide with the Federal High Court in Abuja scheduled to hear a lawsuit today (Friday) that aims to prevent him from running for president in 2027 on the grounds that he has supposedly exceeded the constitutional limit for the position.
Attorney Johnmary Jideobi filed the lawsuit, requesting INEC not approve or publish Jonathan’s name as a candidate in the coming polls.
Jonathan further cautioned that the lack of open electoral procedures deterred capable persons from engaging in politics and asked young Nigerians to support peace and legitimate elections.
He also bemoaned how Nigerians are seen outside, blaming it in part on years of poor leadership.
However, Jonathan reaffirmed that he had merely heard the appeal and that he would hold further discussions before reaching a political decision before 2027.
Meanwhile, the Federal High Court in Abuja will hear the lawsuit, FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, which seeks a ruling that Jonathan is not legally qualified to run for president again.
