A federal high court sitting in Abuja has convicted four persons over their involvement in the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo state.

The Federal Government initially arraigned five suspects on August 11, 2022, and charged them with nine counts of terrorism: Idris Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Otuho Abubakar.

On Wednesday, presiding Judge Emeka Nwite said the prosecution proved its case against four of the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt, and he convicted them on all nine counts.

Justice Nwite found Omeiza, Idris, Abdulmalik, and Idris guilty, while he discharged Abubakar after prosecutors failed to provide evidence linking him to the attack.

According to the judge, the evidence before the court showed that the four defendants belonged to the terrorist group and actively participated in its operations, including the attack on the church.

Consequently, he convicted the four defendants and sentenced them to death by hanging.
