The Kebbi State Government has begun a major crackdown on an emerging cybercrime syndicate known as ‘Yan Vocal’, pledging to dismantle the network and prosecute members involved in online fraud, blackmail, and cyber extortion.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, the government described the syndicate’s activities as a growing threat to public safety and national security.
According to the statement, intelligence reports revealed that the group, made up mainly of youths aged between 19 and 24, operates from parts of Argungu Local Government Area and specializes in hacking social media accounts, creating fake online identities, and extorting victims through threats and blackmail.
The government alleged that the suspects target users on Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, and other social platforms by manipulating video calls, photographs, and explicit content to force victims into making payments.
It added that the syndicate reportedly targets high-profile individuals, including politicians, traditional and religious leaders, business owners, and other prominent figures in Nigeria, as well as neighbouring countries like Niger, Ghana, and Benin Republic.
Authorities disclosed that preliminary investigations have identified 19 suspected members, while security operatives have uncovered some of their methods, meeting points, and digital channels used to receive illicit funds.
The government assured residents that security agencies are actively working to dismantle the network and bring those responsible to justice, while urging the public to stay vigilant online and report cases of cyber extortion or blackmail.
