He was appointed as the 12th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate in 1983 and served in that position for more than four decades. Throughout his long tenure, the Chief Imam of Ilorin provided spiritual leadership and played a key role in shaping religious life in the state.

During his years of service, Sheikh Saliu was admired for promoting peace, unity, and religious tolerance among Muslims and within the wider society. Many followers describe the Chief Imam of Ilorin as a bridge builder whose leadership fostered harmony and mutual respect.
