JUST IN: Lagos Tops INEC’s Voter Registration Ahead of 2027 Elections With Over 7.4 Million Names

Lagos State has emerged as the state with the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This latest INEC voter registration breakdown offers Nigerians an early glimpse into which states could wield the most influence at the polls come 2027.

The figures were disclosed by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan on Tuesday during the commission’s World Press Conference held in Abuja, an event organized as part of INEC’s ongoing preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the breakdown, Lagos leads the pack with a total of 7,488,633 registered voters, comfortably ahead of Kano State, which follows with 6,000,570 registered voters.

Kaduna State occupies third position with 4,000,640 registered voters, while Katsina State trails closely behind in fourth place with 3,876,051. Oyo State ranks fifth with 3,588,111 registered voters, followed by Delta State with 3,525,988.

Further down the list, Benue State recorded 3,057,225 registered voters, placing it ahead of Rivers State, which has 3,000,734. Ogun State sits in ninth position with 3,037,981 registered voters, while Bauchi State rounds off the top 10 with 3,000,047 registered voters.

The Backstory: Why Voter Numbers Matter Ahead of 2027

Voter registration figures often serve as an early indicator of which states could shape the outcome of Nigeria’s general elections, particularly in a country where margins between leading political parties can be razor-thin.

Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna have consistently ranked among Nigeria’s most populous states, so their dominance on the voter register is hardly surprising. However, political analysts usually pay closer attention not just to registration numbers but to actual voter turnout on election day, since high registration figures don’t always translate to high participation at the polls.

As INEC continues preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, these numbers are likely to influence how political parties strategize, allocate resources, and campaign across the country in the months leading up to the polls.
