Nigerians Decry Rising Passport Fees: “Pity Us”

Nigerians have expressed frustration and disappointment on social media following the announcement by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) regarding the increased fees for obtaining passports. The new fees, which were announced on the night of August 21, 2024, represent a significant hike in costs for citizens seeking to renew or obtain new passports.

According to the NIS statement, the cost for a 32-page passport booklet with a 5-year validity has risen from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000. Similarly, the fee for a 64-page passport booklet with a 10-year validity has jumped from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000. This increase has sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their concerns about the financial burden this will place on them.

Critics argue that the timing of the fee hike is particularly insensitive, given the current economic challenges facing the country, including inflation and the rising cost of living. Some have pointed out that the new fees could make it even more difficult for ordinary Nigerians to access essential services, such as international travel for work, education, or family visits.

Others have called on the government to reconsider the fee increase, citing the need for more affordable public services, especially in a country where many citizens struggle to make ends meet. The outcry reflects broader concerns about the affordability and accessibility of government services, and the impact of rising costs on everyday life in Nigeria.

Overall, the increase in passport fees has triggered a wave of discontent, with many Nigerians feeling that their voices are not being heard by those in power. The situation underscores the ongoing tension between citizens and the government over issues of affordability and access to basic services.

Appeal Court overturns Kogi Court’s ruling that shielded Yahaya Bello from arraignment.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has overturned a ruling by a Kogi State High Court that had prevented the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from prosecuting former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello on an N80 billion money laundering charge.

The three-judge panel criticized the lower court’s decision, labeling it as scandalous and accused the trial judge of trying to shield Bello from prosecution. The appellate court ordered Bello to comply with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and present himself for arraignment.

The court’s ruling follows multiple failed attempts to bring Bello to court, as he had previously evaded arraignment by filing various legal challenges. The appeal was filed by the EFCC after Bello had initially secured a favorable judgment from the Kogi State High Court, which the Court of Appeal has now dismissed, affirming the EFCC’s authority to prosecute him.

Kalu urges Otti to join APC ahead of 2027.

Kalu urges Otti to join APC ahead of 2027.

Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has been actively encouraging Governor Alex Otti of Abia State to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election. Otti, who was elected in 2023 under the Labour Party (LP) platform, has been praised by Kalu for his outstanding performance and commitment to the development of Abia State.

Kalu argues that Otti would be more effective in serving the people of Abia under the APC, which he describes as the “party to beat” in 2027. Kalu is confident that the APC will win the governorship in Abia in the next election, emphasizing that the support and developments brought by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, such as the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), should be recognized and repaid with electoral support for the APC.

In a recent video that has gone viral, Kalu reiterated his belief that Abia would benefit more from aligning with the ruling party, especially as the LP faces internal challenges. He also highlighted the precedent set by former Governor Theodore Orji, who joined the PDP after initially winning on a different platform, suggesting that Otti’s potential switch to the APC would be a strategic move that aligns with past political practices in the state. Kalu and other APC stalwarts believe that joining the ruling party before 2027 would not only strengthen Otti’s administration but also position him well for a successful bid for a second term.

Antony Escapes Prosecution in Brazil Amid Domestic Violence Probe

Antony Escapes Prosecution in Brazil Amid Domestic Violence Probe”

Manchester United winger Antony recently avoided prosecution in Brazil over domestic violence allegations made by his ex-girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin. The São Paulo Police concluded their investigation, citing insufficient evidence to indict the footballer. The case has now been sent to the Prosecutor’s Office, which will review the findings and decide whether to pursue formal charges.

Cavallin, a Brazilian DJ, accused Antony of domestic abuse in June 2023, providing photos and private messages as evidence. Despite the severity of the allegations, the investigation did not produce enough evidence for a prosecution. Throughout the process, Antony denied the accusations but faced suspensions from both the Brazilian national team and Manchester United. He was eventually reinstated into Manchester United’s squad in September 2023.

Antony later opened up about his struggles during the 2023/24 season, attributing them to the emotional toll of the allegations and the investigations. Despite the challenges, he continues to play for Manchester United as the legal situation unfolds. The decision by the Prosecutor’s Office will determine if any further legal action will be taken against him.

“NLC’s Ajaero Declines Police Invitation, Threatens Strike”

“NLC’s Ajaero Declines Police Invitation, Threatens Strike”

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), declined a police invitation on Tuesday, citing prior engagements that prevented him from attending. The police had summoned Ajaero to answer questions regarding serious allegations including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. However, Ajaero’s legal team, represented by Falana and Falana Chambers, requested an extension to August 29, 2024, and demanded detailed information on the allegations.

In response to the police summons, the NLC, a prominent labor union in Nigeria, issued a strong warning, threatening mass protests and industrial action if Ajaero is harmed or maltreated. The union criticized the police’s actions as intimidation and harassment, labeling the investigation as politically motivated and aimed at suppressing the labor movement. The NLC emphasized that it would defend its leader and the integrity of the labor movement against what it perceives as unjust and unconstitutional actions.

The NLC also called on civil society organizations and the general public to stand in solidarity with them in what they describe as a critical moment for democracy and workers’ rights in Nigeria. The union noted that while it would comply with the police invitation, it would not recognize the legitimacy of the allegations, viewing them as an attempt to stifle the voice of the working class and undermine their leadership.

The police had initially directed Ajaero to report at the IRT Complex in Abuja on August 20, threatening to issue a warrant for his arrest if he failed to appear. However, the NLC described the police’s invitation as part of a broader pattern of witch-hunting, recalling previous incidents where security agencies allegedly invaded the NLC’s headquarters. The union criticized the police for pursuing these charges instead of addressing the grievances that the NLC had raised, further asserting that the entire situation was a blatant attempt to intimidate and silence the labor movement.

“N15trn Subsidy Under Tinubu Amid Fuel Scarcity”

The Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, has spent N15.096 trillion on petrol subsidies in 14 months, exacerbating fuel scarcity across the country. Despite Tinubu’s initial declaration to remove the subsidy, the naira’s devaluation and high landing costs of petrol have led to a significant increase in subsidy spending. Economists and industry experts argue that this spending negatively impacts government revenue and hinders efforts to stabilize the fuel market. The situation is worsened by the inability of private marketers to import petrol due to forex challenges, leaving the state-owned NNPC as the sole importer.

AA apologizes to INEC Chair, urges him to ignore faction’s claims.

The Action Alliance (AA) has requested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disregard the claims of the Rufai Omoaje faction, insisting that Chief Kenneth Udeze is the rightful National Chairman. In a letter signed by Udeze and addressed to INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the party pointed out that multiple court rulings, including those from the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, affirm Udeze’s leadership. The AA also accused Omoaje’s group of attempting to mislead and blackmail INEC, urging the commission not to recognize Omoaje’s claims, as his appeal lacks merit.

Atiku Challenges Tinubu on Fuel Subsidy Policy

Atiku Challenges Tinubu on Fuel Subsidy Policy.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a fresh critique against President Bola Tinubu’s administration regarding the ongoing subsidy payments for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). This follows Tinubu’s approval for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to use the 2023 dividends due to the federation for subsidizing petrol.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Atiku expressed concern over what he sees as opaque governance under Tinubu’s leadership. He pointed out that this decision contradicts President Tinubu’s earlier declaration during a national broadcast that the subsidy regime had ended. Atiku highlighted that there had been signs of subsidy payments continuing through less transparent methods, even before this announcement.

Atiku argued that the inconsistency between Tinubu’s statements and actions damages the credibility of his administration. He also criticized the delays in re-operating the Port Harcourt refinery, calling it a national embarrassment and attributing the failure to Tinubu, who is also the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

Moreover, Atiku noted that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s denials about subsidy payments only add to the difficulties faced by Nigerians due to fuel shortages and rising prices. He expressed concern over Tinubu’s silence amid ongoing disputes between local investors who favor refinery operations and those advocating for imported PMS.

Atiku called on President Tinubu to take responsibility for resolving these critical issues to protect national interests. He emphasized the need for transparency in the downstream petroleum sector and urged the Tinubu administration to clarify the complexities surrounding the subsidy policy and PMS refining.

2027: Kalu courts Otti to join APC

2027: Kalu courts Otti to join APC

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, is actively encouraging Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. Otti, who won the 2023 gubernatorial election under the Labour Party (LP), is being urged by Kalu to switch allegiance, arguing that Abia would be better served under the APC.

Kalu’s call aligns with a similar appeal made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who had previously urged the governor of Akwa Ibom State to join the APC. Kalu praised Otti for his accomplishments in Abia but insisted that the next governor of the state would be from the APC, expressing confidence in the party’s future success.

Kalu’s push for Otti to join the APC is based on the belief that the state would benefit from stronger ties with the federal government, especially in light of President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the South East Development Commission (SEDC). Kalu suggests that Otti would find a more supportive environment for his development goals within the APC, particularly given the current internal issues within the Labour Party.

The call for Otti to switch parties comes with a historical precedent; former Abia Governor Theodore Orji, who initially won office under the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to align with the central government. This move, according to APC stalwarts, would not only benefit Abia but also position Otti favorably for his second term in office.
