CSOs: Tinubu Hasn’t Addressed Key Demands Yet.

Thirteen civil society organizations (CSOs) have publicly criticized President Bola Tinubu for not addressing the demands of ongoing protests. The groups, which include Accountability Lab Nigeria, BudgIT Foundation, Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), Enough is Enough (EiE) Nigeria, #FixPolitics, Global Rights, Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), and Media Rights Agenda (MRA), among others, issued a joint statement highlighting their concerns.

Key Points from the CSOs’ Statement:

  1. Unmet Demands: The CSOs emphasize that despite extensive planning and mobilization by Nigerians, President Tinubu has yet to meet the protesters’ demands. These demands include protection for farms and farmers, human capital development, electoral reform, establishment of a living wage, and constitutional and judicial reforms.
  2. Call for Dialogue: The CSOs acknowledge the President’s willingness to engage in dialogue but urge that such discussions be conducted sincerely and immediately. They stress the importance of dialogue being facilitated by reputable organizations and recommend the involvement of the National Peace Committee.
  3. Immediate Actions Required: They call for the immediate release of all peaceful protesters who have been detained and for accountability measures against security forces who have reportedly attacked non-violent demonstrators.
  4. Ongoing Protests: The groups note that protesters plan to continue their demonstrations until August 10. They urge the government to address some of the simpler demands as a sign of commitment to citizen-centered governance.
  5. Recommendations for Government: The CSOs recommend that the federal government should address these straightforward requests to demonstrate its commitment to listening to and engaging with its citizens.

The CSOs are pushing for a meaningful and transparent engagement to address the issues raised by the protesters and are calling on both sides to work together constructively to resolve the ongoing crisis.

Adeyanju, Gbajabiamila Vow to Use Lottery for National Benefit.

The Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF) and the National Lottery Commission (NLC) have committed to enhancing value for Nigerians through improved lottery services. This pledge was made during a meeting in Abuja where Tosin Adeyanju, the newly appointed Executive Secretary of the NLTF, visited Lanre Gbajabiamila, the Director-General of the NLC.

Gbajabiamila praised Adeyanju’s appointment as a transformative step that could mend past frictions between the two agencies and align their efforts with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He highlighted that Adeyanju’s leadership is expected to foster a stronger, more cooperative relationship between the NLTF and NLC, which he believes will advance their collective goals and improve the agencies’ reputation both domestically and internationally.

Adeyanju echoed this sentiment, emphasizing his dedication to building a collaborative working relationship between the two agencies. He expressed a strong commitment to jointly organizing events that engage stakeholders in the lottery and gaming industry, aiming to drive positive change and progress within the sector.

Kaduna, Zaria protests cause N700bn losses in 5 days

Kaduna, Zaria protests cause N700bn losses in 5 days.

Protests against hunger turned violent in Kaduna and Zaria, leading to a dusk-to-dawn curfew. The nationwide unrest, which has also impacted Lagos, Abuja, and other cities, has resulted in over N700 billion in losses in just five days. Kaduna and Kano experienced significant economic damage, with Lagos losing N600 billion and Kano over N100 billion.

Criminal elements hijacked the protests, engaging in looting and vandalism. In Kaduna, clashes between hoodlums and security forces led to property damage and a temporary loss of control over an Armoured Personnel Carrier. In Zaria, looting was reported, with two hoodlums killed during clashes.

In Abuja, businesses faced major losses and disruptions, while protests in Lagos continued despite President Tinubu’s address. In Zamfara, protesters waved Russian flags, seeking international attention, though the Russian government disclaimed involvement.

Despite the curfew, some hoodlums defied it, leading to further unrest in Plateau State.

“Oil Transactions Decline Sevenfold Amid Investor Disinterest

“Oil Transactions Decline Sevenfold Amid Investor Disinterest.

In recent years, Nigeria’s oil and gas sector has experienced a significant downturn in corporate deals between privately held businesses and investors. The scale of these transactions, which include mergers, acquisitions, asset sales, and debt financing, has dramatically decreased from $20 billion in 2015 to just $3 billion in 2023. This reduction marks the lowest level of deal activity in the sector in eight years.

The decline in transactions is critical as these deals drive investments, infrastructure improvements, and economic growth. They are essential for enhancing technical expertise and living standards. However, several factors have contributed to the slump in deals, including frequent theft, vandalism, militant attacks, and regulatory changes, which create uncertainty and deter investment. Additionally, infrastructure deficits and stringent local content policies complicate international deals, adding complexity and costs.

The PwC report highlights a brief period of stability in investment levels from 2016 to 2018, followed by a steady decline. Despite a slight uptick in Q1 2024, with transactions reaching $4 billion due to shifts in asset ownership among Nigerian onshore assets, the overall trend remains downward. Major oil companies like ExxonMobil, Equinor, and Eni have been selling assets to local players such as Seplat Energy, Oando, and Chappal Energies.

These sales are part of a broader trend of international oil companies divesting from onshore and shallow water assets, often due to the challenges of operating in the Niger Delta. While local companies see an opportunity to increase production and fill the gap left by international firms, the process has been slow due to regulatory and legal hurdles. For instance, the approval of ExxonMobil’s $1.3 billion sale to Seplat faced significant delays.

Despite these challenges, local companies believe they can increase Nigeria’s oil production by 200,000 barrels per day if the government expedites deal approvals. Recent deals, such as Eni’s sale to Oando and Equinor’s transfer of assets to Chappal, signal a potential shift in the sector, with local firms playing a more prominent role. However, the successful execution of these transactions and subsequent production increases will depend on overcoming regulatory, legal, and operational obstacles.

Nigeria Faces Blackout After National Grid Fails Again.

Nigeria experienced a complete national grid collapse at 1:33 pm on Monday, leading to a widespread blackout across the country. This is the seventh time the grid has failed in 2024, with the last incident occurring on July 6. At its peak, the grid was generating 4,067.77MW before dropping to zero. Various power stations, including Afam IV & V, Azura-Edo IPP, and Shiroro Hydro, saw their outputs fall from hundreds of megawatts to zero. The failure has caused significant disruption, highlighting ongoing issues in Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

Businesses Reopen After States Contain Protests.

On Monday, businesses across Nigeria began reopening despite ongoing protests against the country’s cost-of-living crisis. The protests have drawn significant participation, with hundreds of demonstrators continuing to express their grievances.

The government, both at the federal and state levels, employed various strategies to manage the unrest. This included a mix of persuasive measures and force. The Department of State Services (DSS) arrested individuals in Kano for alleged “treason” related to producing and distributing Russian flags. The police also reported the arrest of 873 people across the country in connection with the protests.

In Lagos, some businesses resumed operations, although customer turnout was lower than usual, likely due to lingering fears of unrest. Markets and shops reopened, and government offices in areas like Alausa, Ikeja, resumed operations. However, security presence remained heavy in some parts, and certain banks and businesses continued to operate cautiously.

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), businesses also reopened but with precautionary measures, including adjusted operating hours and restricted access. The security presence was strong, especially around key government buildings, to prevent the spread of protests beyond designated areas.

The National Security Council, led by President Bola Tinubu, met to discuss the situation. The Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, warned that any attempts to use the protests to push for a change of government would not be tolerated, branding such actions as treasonous. The meeting highlighted concerns that the protests, which began peacefully, had escalated into violence and looting in some areas, particularly in states like Kano and Kaduna.

Overall, while normalcy is slowly returning to business operations, the protests continue to be a significant point of tension in Nigeria, with authorities keen to prevent any further escalation.

#EndBadGovernance Protest Hits Northern Nigeria Hardest.

Northern Nigeria faced the highest impact during the #EndBadGovernance protests, with 29 of the 30 fatalities reported on the first day occurring in northern states, particularly Borno. The region’s severe poverty and insecurity, driven by banditry and kidnappings, have exacerbated the crisis. Northern Nigeria, which has 86 million multidimensionally poor people and significant food insecurity, saw its economic challenges intensified by rising inflation and food prices. This economic strain and insecurity have driven many to protest, leading to chaos and violence in cities like Bauchi, Dutse, Gombe, Kaduna, and Kano, prompting state governments to impose curfews.

Chelsea End Osimhen Pursuit, Bid ₦87 Billion for Another Nigerian Star.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Victor Osimhen appears to be off the table as the club shifts its focus to Atletico Madrid’s Samuel Omorodion. According to Sky Sports’ Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea is reportedly aiming to secure the young striker for around €50 million. This decision comes as Chelsea evaluates the cost-effectiveness and long-term potential of the 20-year-old Omorodion compared to Osimhen.

Omorodion’s age and potential resale value make him an attractive option for Chelsea’s project. Additionally, his lower market price and salary demands are advantageous. While Omorodion currently plays for Spain’s youth teams, he remains eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria, the country of his parents. Despite his appearances for Spain, including a goal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the possibility remains open for him to join the Super Eagles in the future.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has harshly criticized President Bola Tinubu for his lack of response to the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests. The party, through its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, has demanded that President Tinubu address the nation immediately.

The PDP’s statement highlights several key demands:

  • Fuel Price Reduction: The party urges Tinubu to take urgent steps to lower petroleum prices, suggesting that with proper resource management, fuel prices should not exceed N200 per liter.
  • Stabilize the Naira: The PDP calls for measures to curb the Naira’s devaluation and improve economic stability.
  • Address Food Security: There is a call for improved food availability and economic measures to stimulate employment and economic growth.
  • Investigate Violence: The PDP demands a thorough investigation into reports of security agencies and APC-affiliated thugs targeting protesters, urging the government to ensure professionalism in security operations.

DSS Arrests Activist Over Call for Monday Protests.

DSS Arrests Activist Over Call for Monday Protests After Tinubu’s Address.

Micheal Lenin, a prominent leader of the ongoing Endbadgovernance protests in Abuja, was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) early Monday morning. The arrest took place at Lenin’s residence in the Apo area of the Federal Capital Territory around 2 a.m. During the raid, which was conducted in the presence of Lenin’s family, DSS operatives detained him.

Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, confirmed the arrest and demanded Lenin’s immediate and unconditional release. Adenola criticized the DSS’s actions, calling them a severe infringement on the rights of activists.

Lenin had recently criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national address on the protests. He claimed that Tinubu’s speech, delivered after more than three weeks of demonstrations and following incidents of violence against protesters and journalists, demonstrated a disconnect from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians. Lenin argued that the President’s response was dismissive of the protesters’ demands and merely justified state violence.

In his statements, Lenin urged Nigerians to continue the protests, highlighting a perceived failure of both violence and propaganda to address the core issues. He criticized the government’s approach and called for sustained public action until the protesters’ demands were met.
