Seven daughter vessels, collectively carrying 150 million liters of petrol, are currently stranded on the high seas at the Escravos channel, a crucial oil terminal in the Niger Delta. This situation has been identified as the primary cause of the ongoing supply crises.

Due to the shortage of daughter vessels available to transfer petroleum products from mother vessels to Nigerian jetties and terminals, there are disruptions in the supply chain. Huub Stokman, managing director of NNPC Retail Limited and chairman of the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria, highlighted the fragility of Nigeria’s supply chain and the complications caused by even minor issues like bad weather or low tide.

Another significant concern in the downstream sector is the imminent completion of Nigeria’s Dangote oil refinery, which is expected to significantly alter the dynamics of the gasoline trade in Africa. The refinery’s operation threatens to disrupt the $17 billion annual gasoline trade from Europe to Africa, leading to increased pressure on European refineries already facing competition.

With the Dangote refinery now in production, there are expectations of fundamental changes in the market dynamics, particularly in vessel operations and fuel supply patterns. Despite short-term efforts to address supply shortages, fundamental challenges remain, particularly concerning the entry of Dangote into the market and its impact on existing players and infrastructure.

Despite a surge in sales, the combined profit of cement manufacturers in Nigeria declined during the first three months of 2024, largely due to the devaluation of the naira. Dangote Cement Plc, BUA Cement Plc, and Lafarge Africa Plc collectively reported an after-tax profit of N135.5 billion in Q1, down from N151.2 billion in the same period last year. However, Dangote Cement bucked this trend, as its after-tax profit increased to N112.7 billion in Q1 compared to N109.5 billion in the same period of 2023.

Lafarge Africa’s after-tax profit declined to N5.19 billion from N14.9 billion, while BUA Cement’s earnings fell to N17.9 billion from N26.8 billion.

Despite facing challenges such as elevated costs and currency depreciation, Dangote Cement’s CEO, Arvind Pathak, expressed satisfaction with the company’s performance. He highlighted significant revenue growth and increased operational volumes, particularly in Nigeria and across Africa.

Lafarge Africa’s CEO, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, attributed the decline in profit to foreign exchange losses resulting from naira devaluation but emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering sustainable value in the long term.

The recent depreciation of the naira has affected businesses across sectors, leading to increased costs and financial challenges for companies reliant on imports or foreign currency transactions.

During the examination period from April 19th to April 29th, over 1.9 million candidates participated in the computer-based test aimed at assessing candidates for admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria. However, Mr. Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, disclosed that the results of 64,624 candidates have been withheld due to potential infractions, pending further investigation by the board.

Mr. Oloyede revealed, “Out of a total of 1,989,668 registered candidates, 80,810 were absent. A total of 1,904,189 candidates sat for the UTME within the six days of the examination…” He confirmed the release of results for 1,842,464 candidates.

The lawyer intends to affix a restraining order at the MultiChoice office regarding the DSTV price increase.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja has directed that its interim order, which restrains MultiChoice Nigeria Limited from increasing DSTV tariffs, be displayed at the firm’s corporate headquarters or any known branches nationwide.

Chairman Saratu Shafii, in the order dated April 29, 2024, specified that the document should also reach MultiChoice via email, social media platforms, and any other public communication channels.

The interim order, preventing MultiChoice from implementing tariff increases, was granted following a petition by Abuja-based lawyer Festus Onifade, who objected to the recent announcement of tariff hikes on DStv and Gotv packages, effective May 1.

In his lawsuit, marked CCPT/OP/2/2024, Onifade listed MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission as defendants.

He requested “an order of interim injunction…

restraining the 1st defendant from going ahead with the impending price increase… pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

The tribunal issued the order on Monday, April 29, halting MultiChoice from raising tariffs pending further proceedings.

However, during attempts to serve MultiChoice, the bailiff reported that staff at the Abuja office refused to accept the documents, instructing instead to send them to the Lagos headquarters. Consequently, the tribunal authorized substituted service on MultiChoice.

In the certified true copy of the order, the tribunal instructed the posting of the ex-parte order at MultiChoice branches nationwide and also communicated via email, social media, and other public platforms.

MultiChoice had attributed the price increments to operational costs in Nigeria.
