Ronda Rousey Breaks Silence on MMA Retirement in New Memoir

0

Ronda Rousey, the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion, is finally shedding light on the true reason behind her abrupt retirement from MMA in 2016.

During an Instagram Live session promoting her upcoming memoir, “Our Fight,” Rousey revealed the hidden medical struggles that ultimately forced her out of the octagon. For years, she kept her history of concussions a secret, fearing it would jeopardize her ability to compete.

“The concussion history that I had to keep secret for years… that’s basically why I had to retire,” Rousey stated, responding to a question from her interviewer and sister, Maria Burns-Ortiz.

Rousey’s undefeated streak and dominant reign ended with a shocking knockout loss to Holly Holm in December 2015. This defeat, along with the subsequent loss to Amanda Nunes a year later, marked a turning point in her career.

Speaking publicly for the first time about the Holm fight, Rousey acknowledged the emotional weight it carried. She explained the difficulty of discussing the loss openly, given her medical history.

“So much had to do with having so many concussions when I was in judo before I even got into MMA,” she revealed. “I couldn’t talk about it at all when I was doing MMA because it would literally put a target on my head, and I might not have been allowed to compete any further.”

Rousey’s concerns extended beyond her MMA career. She worried that disclosing her concussions could negatively impact her later venture into professional wrestling with WWE.

“Same thing with WWE,” she admitted. “They have a complicated history with concussions, and it would be a bad look on them.”

The memoir format, according to Rousey, provided a platform to finally address the complexities surrounding her retirement. Despite outward appearances of peak performance, her body ultimately made the decision to step away after the two consecutive losses.

Regina King Returns to Jimmy Kimmel Live After Son’s Death in Emotional Interview

Regina King Returns to Jimmy Kimmel Live After Son’s Death in Emotional Interview

Regina King made a heartfelt appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday night, her first since the tragic death of her son Ian in January 2022.

Kimmel visibly choked up upon greeting King, acknowledging the immense loss she’d endured. King, with a brave smile, responded, “It’s good to see you, Jimmy,” even reaching out to hold his hand in a touching moment.

King appeared on the show to promote her new film “Shirley,” but the conversation inevitably touched on her personal journey through grief. She recently opened up to Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, admitting the lingering guilt she grapples with as a parent who lost a child.

King, an Oscar winner, expressed the constant questioning that haunts many grieving parents: “What could I have done?”

Despite the immense pain, King has found a space of acceptance. “I respect and understand that he didn’t want to be here anymore,” she shared with Roberts. She emphasized the importance of honoring Ian’s life in its entirety, “He is always with me. And the joy and happiness that he gave all of us.”

King has also spoken candidly about the challenges to her faith since Ian’s passing. In a recent Harper’s Bazaar interview, she confessed feeling like the universe hadn’t rewarded the effort poured into helping her son overcome depression.

King described Ian as “pure joy and pure light,” highlighting the mask of positivity he often wore. “He never presented that way,” she said of his internal struggles. “That’s why I know that a smile doesn’t always mean happy.”

King concluded by remembering Ian’s capacity to make others feel special. “He was putting a lot into things… into this world,” she said, reflecting on the hardship he endured despite his outward efforts.

King’s resilience and honesty in sharing her story offer a glimpse into the complexities of grief, particularly for a parent. The interview serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support.

The federal government’s recent borrowing

0

The federal government’s recent borrowing increases Nigeria’s public debt to N97.3 trillion.

According to data released by the Debt Management Office (DMO) on Friday in Abuja, Nigeria’s public debt rose by 10.7% from N87.87 trillion in Q3’24 to N97.34 trillion as of December 31, 2023. The increase was mainly due to new domestic borrowing by the Federal Government (FG) to finance the deficit in the 2024 Appropriation Act and disbursements by multilateral and bilateral lenders.

The public debt, totaling N97.3 trillion, consists of N59.12 trillion in domestic debt and N38.22 trillion in external debt. During the review period, $3.5 billion was used to service external debt. The DMO stated that Nigeria’s external debt was largely from multilateral and bilateral lenders, accounting for 63.79% of the total external debt stock.

While domestic debt accounted for 61% of the total public debt stock, the DMO emphasized the need for the fiscal authorities to increase revenue to support debt sustainability, despite their continued efforts to employ best practices in public debt management.

Exes Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Support Son Saint at Basketball Game

Kim Kardashian and her former husband Kanye West presented a united front while cheering on their son Saint at his basketball game on Friday evening. Kardashian, recently mourning the loss of her aunt, sported a casual look in a white Balenciaga outfit and black baseball cap, while West opted for an all-black ensemble complete with Nike sneakers, possibly referencing his strained relationship with Adidas.

The former couple displayed a friendly demeanor throughout the game. West even embraced Kardashian in a casual gesture. Kardashian showcased her signature style with long braids framing her face, chunky sneakers, and a fuzzy white Balenciaga purse. Both parents were dressed comfortably, with Kardashian in sweatpants and a t-shirt, and West in a hooded sweatshirt.

Saint, sporting a black, grey, and white basketball uniform and bright green Nike sneakers, stole the show with his adorable appearance. His curly hair featured a stylish bleach-blonde top contrasted by short-cut sides.

Kim was joined by her cousin Cici Bussey, a familiar face on the Kardashian family’s reality shows, who donned a long tan suede coat. The supportive parents took turns cheering for Saint, with West even offering words of encouragement during the game. Kardashian and West share four children together: North (10), Saint (8), Chicago (6), and Psalm (almost 5). Kardashian frequently shares glimpses of her life as a mom on social media.

Meanwhile, Kanye has been more private about his relationship with his new wife, Bianca Censori (28). However, on the same day, he posted a photo of Censori relaxing in their bed, dressed in white lace and heels. Censori, an architectural designer who has worked for Kanye’s Yeezy brand since 2020, appeared content surrounded by plush pillows.

Tinubu’s tenure saw 6,931 deaths in 10 months, surpassing Buhari’s 8,356 and Jonathan’s 2,059. Among them, 17 soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel, two majors, and a captain, were killed during alleged peace talks in Okuama. This led to a military siege and at least 50 more deaths. The figures, though conservative, were gathered from media reports and the Nigeria Security Tracker. Recurring attacks by bandits in various states, including Zamfara and Benue, have contributed to the rising death toll, alongside violence in the South-East, South-South, and parts of the South-West.

Odi and Zaki Biam, Nigeria suffers.

Just like Odi and Zaki Biam, Nigeria suffers in Okuoma.

The killing of soldiers by warring youths in Okuoma, Delta State, has stirred deep sorrow and emotion among Nigerians. Initially reported as 16, their picture collage revealed they were 17. This loss has overshadowed the anger over allegations of budget padding by the national assembly and misuse of public funds by senators.

The soldiers, including a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and others, were on a peacekeeping mission

The soldiers, including a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and others, were on a peacekeeping mission when Okuoma youths surrounded and killed them. Since then, soldiers have retaliated by setting houses ablaze and making arrests in Okuoma, resulting in more deaths.

This incident recalls similar tragedies in Odi, Bayelsa State, and Zaki Biam, Benue State. The Odi massacre in 1999 saw over 900 civilians killed by the military, while in Zaki Biam in 2001, hundreds of unarmed civilians were executed in retaliation for the killing of soldiers.

Like in Odi and Zaki Biam, blood is now flowing in Okuoma, with many residents killed and others displaced. It’s a national calamity, highlighting our failure to learn from past tragedies.

England Fans and Politicians Fume Over Nike’s “Playful Update” to National Jersey

England Fans and Politicians Fume Over Nike’s “Playful Update” to National Jersey

Brits are up in arms over Nike’s recent alteration of the St. George’s Cross on England’s new soccer jerseys. This “playful update,” as Nike calls it, replaces the traditional red cross on a white background with a mix of red, blue, and purple on the back collar.

While Nike claims this is a modern homage to the 1966 World Cup team, fans are having none of it. Social media and radio shows are buzzing with disapproval, with many calling for a return to the classic design.

Prime Minister Weighs In

Even Prime Minister Rishi Sunak voiced his disapproval: “Our national flags are a source of pride, identity, and who we are. They’re perfect as they are. I prefer the original.”

Political Football

With a national election looming, this controversy has become a political football. Opposition leader Keir Starmer joined the chorus of disapproval, urging Nike to “reconsider.” Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of tradition in sports.

Nike Stays Silent

Despite the growing anger, Nike has yet to respond to the backlash. They continue to tout the inspiration from the 1966 team’s training gear.

A Symbol of Deeper Issues

This jersey redesign controversy underscores the deep significance of national symbols. While Nike may have intended a playful update, the reaction shows the importance of respecting cultural heritage. It seems fans and officials alike are sending a clear message: don’t mess with the St. George’s Cross.

Manchester United Eye Leicester City’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as Midfield Rebuild Begins

Manchester United Eye Leicester City’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as Midfield Rebuild Begins

Manchester United are reportedly setting their sights on Leicester City’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as they prepare to revamp their midfield this summer.

The Red Devils are prioritizing a central midfielder with the expected departures of veteran Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. Talented youngster Kobbie Mainoo is on the rise at Old Trafford, but reinforcements are needed to bolster the position.

According to reports, Leicester City might be open to selling Dewsbury-Hall for a reduced fee due to financial constraints. Despite rejecting a £20 million bid from Brighton in January, the Foxes’ situation could see them part ways with the midfielder.

Dewsbury-Hall has been a standout performer in the Championship this season, racking up 10 goals and 12 assists for Leicester City as they chase promotion back to the Premier League. His impressive form has caught the eye of Manchester United, who view him as a potential solution to their midfield woes.

Davido faces further trouble as he

Davido faces further trouble as he agrees to pay N30 million to Amaju Pinnick in a N2.3 billion lawsuit. Additionally, he is obligated to perform at the ‘Warri Again’ concert.

Nigerian singer Davido, also known as David Adedeji Adeleke, has agreed to settle a breach of contract lawsuit filed by Brownhill Investment Company Limited, led by Amaju Pinnick, out of court.

Davido will pay N30 million to the claimant as part of the agreement, contributing to legal fees. The payment is due within seven days of settling the terms.

In February, a Delta State High Court rejected Davido’s request to halt proceedings in the N2 billion lawsuit related to the ‘Warri Again Concert.’

Brownhill Investment Company Limited claimed Davido agreed to perform at their event but instead attended another in Australia.

The claimant seeks N2 billion in damages and N150 million for legal expenses. Davido’s counsel withdrew their motion for a stay of proceedings.

The court affirmed that proceedings would continue until an order from the Court of Appeal intervenes. Pre-Trial Conference forms must be filed within 14 days. The case resumes on March 21, 2024.
