Nigerian Senate Delays Resumption After House Postponement

Both Houses of Parliament Adjust Schedules:

The Nigerian Senate has joined the House of Representatives in postponing their resumption from the Easter and Sallah break. Originally scheduled for April 16th, 2024, the Senate will now reconvene on April 23rd, 2024.

Senate Cites Unforeseen Circumstances:

A brief message from the Clerk to the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, informed senators of the delay due to “unforeseen circumstances.” No specific details were provided. The House of Representatives previously announced their postponement due to ongoing renovations to their main chambers.

Minority Caucus Opposes Electricity Price Hike:

The House Minority Caucus took the opportunity to criticize the recent 300% tariff increase for Band A electricity consumers (city dwellers) implemented by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). They urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and have the NERC reverse the decision, calling it “inhuman and evil.”

Emphasis on Transparency and Accountability:

The Minority Caucus advocates for open communication and collaboration to address inefficiencies in the energy sector. They believe this will lead to long-term solutions that benefit all stakeholders, not just continuous tariff increases. Additionally, they emphasize increased accountability and transparency in managing electricity sector resources.

Citizens’ Needs Come First:

The Caucus argues that the electricity price hike, exceeding the inflation rate, disregards the struggles of ordinary citizens facing economic hardship. They believe citizens have the right to efficient service delivery and fair pricing that aligns with their economic realities.
