Abia State governor, Alex Otti

LP, APC in War of Words Over Alleged Underpayment of Abia Workers

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has sent an official letter to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, calling on him to upgrade the living standards of both public workers and pensioners in the state.

In the correspondence, the APC alleged that a number of civil servants within the state receive monthly salaries well below the mandated N70,000 national minimum wage standard.

The party stated that “Also very disappointing was the widely published announcement made by your administration over a year ago, promising to increase the monthly allowance of NYSC members serving in the State to N50,000.”

However, responding to the APC’s correspondence, the Abia State leadership of the Labour Party (LP) accused the rival party of disseminating desperate and fabricated falsehoods regarding the Otti administration’s handling of workers and retirees.

Speaking through State Publicity Secretary Iroegbu Emenike, the LP asserted that the era of senior citizens dying in queues while waiting for their pension has come to an end in the state.

The LP further countered that the very individuals now within the state’s APC were responsible for dragging the state backward for nearly three decades prior to Governor Alex Otti’s tenure, asserting that the opposition party lacked the moral standing to address such a letter to the Governor.

The ruling party maintained that public servants and retirees consistently receive their salary payments and monthly retirement benefits without fail under the current leadership.

Furthermore, the LP criticized the APC for trying to exploit administrative delays in implementing increased monthly allowances for NYSC members, stating the opposition fails to realize that executive declarations require structural procedures and policy frameworks before they take full effect.

Backstory…

Governor Alex Otti’s administration has continued to attract both praise and criticism since he assumed office in May 2023.

Supporters point to sweeping road reconstruction projects, reforms in the health and education sectors, improved urban sanitation and efforts to boost internally generated revenue as evidence of a transformative agenda that has reshaped public perception of governance in the State

However, despite these achievements, Otti has remained a frequent target of political attacks from opposition parties, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC) and factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Critics have questioned aspects of his economic policies, public spending, workers’ welfare and implementation of campaign promises, while his supporters argue that many of the criticisms are politically motivated.
