Lt. A.M. Yerima, the young Nigerian Navy officer who recently clashed with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, has been reported to have narrowly an attempted murder on Sunday night.

According to military sources who spoke to newsmen, Yerima was being followed by two unmarked Hilux vans with no license plates and unidentified black-clad personnel. He was allegedly trailed by the cars from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Motorway to Gado Nasco Way.

The source claims that after seeing the surveillance, the cop used a “strategic manoeuvre” to successfully elude the alleged attackers. According to reports, the incident happened at 6:30 p.m.

The source further stated that the issue is being looked into and is being given “the seriousness it deserves,” adding that more information is being kept to avoid jeopardising the proceedings.

This comes days after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Lt. Yerima got into a heated argument over a disputed land site in Gaduwa District while Yerima was on duty with other security officers. The altercation, which was caught on camera, generated a lot of public discussion and led to the President’s involvement, which stopped the demolition process at the location.

Military veterans across the country denounced Wike for verbally abusing the officer after the event and rejected calls for Yerima to face disciplinary punishment

Meanwhile, Mohammad Badaru Abubakar, the minister of defence, has promised that no military troops acting lawfully will face consequences for the altercation.

“We will always protect officers and our armed forces personnel on lawful duty,” Badaru said during a ministerial briefing for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations at the National Defence College.

“Any officer on lawful duty will be protected if he is doing his job lawfully and doing it well.”
