Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has urged Nigerians to exercise greater caution and critical thinking when choosing their leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a post shared on X on Monday, Mahdi Shehu advised voters not to be influenced by catchy campaign slogans, religious sentiments, or outward displays of piety by politicians.

“As the 2027 elections approach, it is important that voters receive unbiased guidance,” he stated.

He encouraged citizens to think carefully before making political choices, warning that many campaign slogans are designed to mislead.

“Do not be swayed by slogans, as most party slogans can be deceptive and are often used to attract voters,” he said.

Mahdi Shehu also cautioned against voting based on religion, noting that such appeals may not reflect the true character or intentions of candidates.

“Do not rely on religious sentiments when making your choice,” he added.

He criticised politicians who suddenly become visibly religious during election periods, attending various mosques and churches and making donations.

“Regardless of party affiliation, be wary of politicians who start frequenting different places of worship during election season with donations,” he said.

The commentator urged voters to thoroughly investigate the backgrounds of candidates before offering support.

“Take time to examine their past records,” he advised.

He stressed that candidates should have no criminal convictions, either within Nigeria or abroad, and should not be linked to crimes such as human trafficking, organ harvesting, or drug trafficking.

He also emphasised the need for transparency in candidates’ sources of wealth and their personal background.

“Ensure they have a verifiable family background and that their wealth is not connected to fraudulent activities,” he said.

Mahdi Shehu further warned against electing candidates who have a history of neglecting their constituencies after assuming office.

“Confirm that the candidate is not someone who would abandon their constituency and relocate to Abuja after winning,” he noted.

He advised voters to carry out a thorough assessment of candidates’ character and personality rather than being influenced by appearances, lifestyle, or material displays.

“Do not judge them by their looks, dressing, or the cars they display,” he added.

Finally, he suggested that voters should hold candidates accountable by demanding written commitments.

“Get them to sign a written and enforceable Memorandum of Understanding and document it for future reference,” he said.
