Seyi Makinde PDP Defection Rumours Dismissed After Meeting Tinubu

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has dismissed speculations about a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) party.

Makinde says he remains comfortable in the party despite recent political realignments. The governor addressed this amidst the PDP defection rumors after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

He was asked about reports suggesting that some PDP governors and leaders had defected to APC. While responding, he made it clear that his defection story is unfounded and does not reflect his current political stance.

Speaking on whether he was considering a move to the APC, the governor said he had no such plans and stressed that his loyalty to the PDP remains firm. According to him, the defection talks should not distract his governance and national interest.

“I’m comfortable in the PDP,” Makinde said.

He explained that there are moments when a bipartisan approach is necessary for the progress of the country. Makinde noted that national issues should not be viewed strictly along party lines, a point he raised while addressing the defection speculation.

“Again, we may have issues in this country where a bipartisan approach is required. It shouldn’t be a situation where only the APC is talking or only the PDP is talking. We must look at what puts our best foot forward in the interest of our nation.”

The governor added that when national interest is involved, cooperation across party lines becomes important. He stressed that unity becomes essential at such moments.

“At that point, you need everybody on board,” he noted.

Makinde’s comments suggest openness to a bipartisan dialogue at the national level while firmly maintaining his political base within the Peoples Democratic Party. His remarks clearly reject any immediate defection to the APC.

NaijaEyes earlier reported that Governor Makinde met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday. He reportedly arrived shortly after Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who recently defected from the PDP to the APC, was also at the State House.
