Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has urged Nigeria’s opposition parties to stick together, cautioning that the country’s democracy may suffer greatly if the opposition becomes weaker.
Makinde said this on Saturday during a summit of opposition leaders in Ibadan.
According to the organisers, the summit’s goal was to improve coordination between political parties.
Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and other parties attended the event at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House.
Speaking during the event, Makinde also emphasised that the goal of the gathering was responsible political engagement rather than conflict or division.
“If we allow opposition to weaken, whether by design or by neglect, then we all bear the consequences. So this is not a movement for fragmentation, it is not a movement for violence, and it is certainly not a movement to disengage politically.
Additionally, Makinde stated that the goal was to promote thoughtful and responsible engagement across party lines in the interest of national stability.
“It is a movement to think clearly, to speak honestly, and to act with a sense of responsibility that goes beyond party lines.
Makinde pointed out that cooperation and open communication between political players are necessary to address Nigeria’s present socioeconomic and security issues.
Nigeria has gone too far to act as like this is nothing, and it is our collective duty to make sure it doesn’t get worse.
