Lagos State government has reportedly commenced humanitarian support for residents impacted by recent safety enforcement actions in parts of Makoko, as the government moves to ease the hardship caused by the interventions around high-risk zones.

The state is offering palliative care, relocation support, and other targeted relief to impacted families in Makoko, according to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who emphasised that government action may combine compassion and firmness.

“While rules must be enforced, the government also has a responsibility to show understanding and provide support,” the governor said.

State officials claim that homes near high-tension power lines and other vital infrastructure deemed unsafe for habitation are the target of the relief initiative. Numerous buildings that were impacted had multiple tenants, including vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.

Included in the relief package are food items, temporary relocation support and financial stipends, with implementation coordinated through local government authorities and relevant state ministries to ensure timely delivery and accountability.

The goal is to protect lives and infrastructure, not to uproot entire communities, according to Sanwo-Olu, who clarified that community engagements were conducted prior to the enforcement effort.

Additionally, he said that while the government is still willing to examine issues and provide clarification on the extent of continuing operations, ministries have been directed to accurately record all relief efforts and improve communication with locals.

The governor stated that the Makoko action is a reflection of the state’s larger strategy of striking a balance between public safety, urban development, social responsibility, and assistance for individuals who are at risk.
