Following retaliation attacks triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and the middle east, European Union Foreign Policy chief Kaja Kalla announced that the bloc’s foreign ministers would meet for “extraordinary” talks on the subject on Sunday.

“I will convene an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council via video link on Sunday to address Iran and the rapidly unfolding events across the Middle East,” Kallas wrote on X.

“The Iranian regime’s indiscriminate attacks against its neighbours carry the risk of dragging the region into a broader war, and we condemn this.”

The development comes after the United States and Israel launched a series of raids against targets in Iranian cities on Saturday, causing explosions and smoke columns in Tehran, the country’s capital which promoted retaliatory actions across the Middle East

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz referred to the action as a “preventive strike,” while US President Donald Trump stated that Washington’s objective was “eliminating imminent threats” from Iran.

US President Donald Trump said Washington’s goal was “eliminating imminent threats” from Iran, while Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the action as a “preventive strike.”

In a video message posted on his social media platform, Trump said, “The United States’ military began major combat operations in Iran.”

He added, “We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally, again, obliterated. We’re going to annihilate their navy.”

Despite a flurry of Iranian airstrikes, the Pentagon claimed Saturday that there have been no recorded American injuries as a result of Iran’s reaction and that damage to US installations has been “minimal.”

Following the initial US and Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic, “CENTCOM forces successfully defended against hundreds of Iranian missile and drone attacks,” the US Central Command, which launched the American operation at the orders of President Donald Trump, said in a statement.

“There have been no reports of US casualties or combat-related injuries. Damage to US installations was minimal and has not impacted operations.”
