The Imo State government has defended its recent decision to raise the minimum wage for civil personnel to N104,000 through Mr. Oguwike Nwachuku, the governor’s media adviser and chief press secretary.
Speaking Thursday on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief, Nwachuku reassured the workers and the public that the new pay is a viable policy supported by notable improvements in the state’s financial situation rather than a populist one.
Governor Hope Uzodimma’s statement on Tuesday generated a mixture of enthusiasm and scepticism, with many people doubting the state’s capacity to sustain the high wage level in comparison to other states.
Nwachuku, however, took advantage of the national stage to confront these issues head-on, pointing to the state’s enormous increase in internally generated revenue as the main facilitator.
“The government of Hope Uzodimma has invested in building a digital economy and a new template of development.
“When this government came on board, the IGR was less than N400 million, but today, we are talking about an IGR of about N3bn to N4bn. This is a very clear pointer that the government is on the right track financially.
“This revenue growth is a direct result of the administration’s efforts to block financial leakages, digitise government processes, and create a conducive environment for both local and foreign investment,” Nwachuku stated during the interview.
The CPS also cited the government’s well-known infrastructure initiatives, such building 46 highways throughout the state, as proof of its long-term development goals and sound financial management.
He emphasised that the Imo state minimum wage raise was not a political ploy ahead of an election, but rather a well-considered decision that was reached after the state’s financial capacity was carefully examined.
Nwachuku explained that “the new minimum wage structure would be implemented with the August 2025 salaries, while consequential adjustments for other cadres of the civil service will be implemented in subsequent months” in answer to enquiries regarding the payment’s timeliness.
