The Nigerian Navy has disrupted a major illegal fuel smuggling network operating along the waterways of Rivers State. Specifically, during a targeted intelligence-led operation, naval operatives successfully intercepted and seized approximately 22,870 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, popularly known as diesel.
The sweep dismantled a hidden logistics node before the illicit products could enter local commercial supply markets. Consequently, this intervention marks another major victory for the country’s ongoing military campaign against widespread economic sabotage and oil theft within the Niger Delta region.

The Backstory: Combating the Hidden Creek Supply Networks
To truly understand the massive scale of this security victory, one must look at the difficult, dangerous terrain where these economic saboteurs operate.
Originally, illegal refining networks—locally referred to as kpofire operations—have thrived by tapping directly into crude pipelines running through remote riverine communities. The operators process this stolen crude oil in crude, makeshift bush camps before packing the fuel into industrial bags.
Furthermore, they rely entirely on the vast, winding network of isolated rivers to slip past traditional military checkpoints unnoticed. Therefore, mapping out these hidden jungle supply paths requires intense, long-term intelligence gathering and constant vigilance from dedicated maritime security forces.
The Operation: High-Tech Drones Expose Hidden Jungle Stashes
This recent breakthrough was achieved by alert personnel from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH working under the specialized umbrella of Operation Delta Sentinel.
Breakdown of the Naval Interception:
-
-
Primary Target Location: Orashi Forest area, Abua/Odual Local Government Area – Initial Seizure: One large wooden boat packed with 36 industrial sacks of diesel – High-Tech Surveillance: Drone deployment revealed hidden storage areas in nearby ponds – Total Final Haul: 81 industrial sacks containing exactly 22,870 litres of illegal fuel

Conclusively, the naval patrol team first intercepted a large wooden boat moving suspiciously through a creek corridor bordering Bayelsa State. To expand their search, officers quickly launched an aerial drone over the thick forest canopy.
This advanced aerial view successfully uncovered additional large stockpiles hidden beneath heavy foliage and submerged in muddy swamp ponds. Ultimately, the team uncovered an extra 45 hidden sacks, bringing the total haul to 81 large bags. Thus, authorities completely disabled the logistics setup and processed all seized items in accordance with strict anti-theft rules.
