The Nigerian Navy has recorded another major breakthrough in its ongoing operations against militancy and criminal activities in the Calabar waterways, following the handover of a suspected militant collaborator to the Department of State Services (DSS) in Calabar.
According to a statement signed by the Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the suspect, identified as Ubong Clement, was arrested by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory, deployed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The Nigerian Navy said the arrest is part of sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and their support systems in the area.
Preliminary investigations reportedly showed that the suspect had regular contact with members of militant groups operating around the Dayspring Island axis and was allegedly involved in activities that interfered with ongoing security operations. He was also linked to a known militant, Steven Joseph, also called “Juju,” who is associated with criminal activities within the waterways.
Further findings indicated that the suspect allegedly served as a channel for disposing goods stolen from intercepted market boats by militants. The proceeds from these sales were reportedly channelled back into the militant network to support their operations financially and logistically.
After preliminary investigations were concluded, the Navy confirmed that the suspect was transferred to the DSS for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with the law.
The statement added that the handover reflects the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to targeting not only direct perpetrators of militancy but also those who support and sustain their operations.
It also reaffirmed the Navy’s resolve to continue intelligence-driven operations, community engagement, and targeted interventions aimed at ensuring lasting peace and security in the Calabar waterways and surrounding communities.
