Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Sunday Ebitare Thompson, a grassroots mobilizer of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Bayelsa State, has resigned from the party.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated June 27, 2026, addressed to the NDC Chairman of Ward 13 in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Thompson had only recently joined the NDC on May 17, 2026, after defecting from the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside his supporters.
Although he did not disclose the reason for his departure, his resignation may be linked to the internal crisis that followed the party’s primary elections.
In the resignation letter sighted on Sunday, Thompson stated: “I hereby formally resign and withdraw my membership from the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), effective immediately.
“I appreciate the opportunity to have been part of the party and wish the party success in its future endeavors.”

BACKSTORY:
Ebitare’s resignation comes amid growing uncertainty within the NDC in Bayelsa following reported internal disagreements after the party’s primary elections. His exit is also happening at a time when the party has been battling defections and leadership tensions, despite recent efforts by top figures like Seriake Dickson to calm members and strengthen unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
His move is particularly notable because he had only joined the NDC in May after leaving the APC alongside his supporters, making his latest resignation another sign of the shifting political alliances in Bayelsa.
