Ezenwo Nyesom Wike emphasized that participating in the elections is a crucial duty of citizens in reinforcing democratic governance.

Wike made the appeal in his 2026 New Year message to FCT residents, delivered on Thursday.

He extended warm New Year greetings to residents, commending them for their resilience and cooperation with the FCT Administration over the past year.

“Dear residents of the Federal Capital Territory, I urge you all to use your votes wisely in the upcoming Area Council elections,” Ezenwo Nyesom Wike said.

“As citizens, participating in free, fair, and peaceful elections is part of our collective responsibility to strengthen democracy and ensure accountable governance at the local level.”

The Minister emphasized that the FCT Administration is committed to providing a safe, free, and fair environment for the elections, which will take place across the Territory’s six Area Councils in the coming weeks.

He assured residents that all measures would be taken to prevent violence, malpractice, or any disruption to the electoral process.

Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, beyond the elections, highlighted the importance of the year 2026 as a time to build on the achievements of the past.

He noted that the FCT Administration has already laid the groundwork for projects in critical sectors such as education, health, transport, security, agriculture, and the judiciary.

“We look forward to commissioning rehabilitated schools, roads, bridges, health facilities, transportation hubs, security infrastructure, and facilities for the judiciary. These projects will positively impact the lives of all residents, regardless of social status.”

Ezenwo Nyesom Wike also reminded residents that 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Federal Capital Territory.

He described the golden jubilee as a testament to the vision of the founding fathers and to the resilience of Nigerians who have maintained peace and unity in the FCT over the past five decades.

In addition to his focus on elections and governance, the Minister encouraged residents to embrace virtues such as diligence, discipline, and determination, which he described as essential for achieving collective goals and sustaining development.

“My good people of the FCT, as we move into this amazing year. Let us move into this year with dogged determination, unshaken faith, and unity of purpose to ensure the peace, prosperity, and progress that the FCT truly craves,” Wike said.

“On this auspicious occasion of the New Year celebration, once again, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful, peaceful, and prosperous 2026.”
