BREAKING: America’s Robert Francis Prevost announced as new Pope, to be called Pope Leo XIV
Cardinal Robert Prevost has been appointed the next pope, assuming the Roman Catholic Church leadership role after Pope Francis’s death last month.
The new pope will assume the name Pope Leo XIV.
Cardinal Robert Prevost, born in Chicago — is an American missionary who spent his life of service as a minister in Peru and oversees the Vatican’s powerful office of bishops.
White smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel chimney on Thursday afternoon and informed the world that the College of Cardinals had secured the required two-thirds majority on the new pope.
Many names have been put forward as favorites prior to the conclave, but the relatively new batch of cardinals in the running – approximately 80% in the conclave were appointed since Francis was elected in 2013 – has made it difficult to hazard a guess.
Among the favorites is Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Francis’s Vatican secretary of state who presided over the conclave.
The 70-year-old is much less charismatic than Francis was, but he has been portrayed as a cunning statesman who could be an asset to the image of the Catholic Church in the world.
But others say he is too bureaucratic and not sufficiently pastoral – and that the leader of the Catholics should be focused on religion, not diplomacy.
