NFF Fires Super Falcons Coach Madugu, Other Technical Crew Members

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu and members of his technical staff have been ordered to resign immediately by the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF).

In a succinct statement posted on its official X account, the NFF made the announcement.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Nigeria’s poor performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, or WAFCON, prompted the decision.

However, according to PUNCH Online, the Super Falcons had a difficult Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign, starting their Group C campaign with a loss to Malawi, who were participating for the first time.

Malawi advanced to the final, where they were defeated by Cameroon, who on Sunday won the WAFCON championship for the first time.

Nigeria’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals following a loss to Cameroon, which prevented the Super Falcons from automatically qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027.

The Super Falcons then had another chance to guarantee their spot in the World Cup by playing South Africa in a playoff, but they also lost that game.

Backstory…

After losing 2-1 to South Africa and missing out on a spot in the inter-confederation playoffs, Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup have took a significant blow.

Madugu had previously led Nigeria to its 10th WAFCON title in 2025, making the abrupt end to his tenure particularly striking. However, the team’s poor showing at the 2026 tournament and subsequent failure to secure a World Cup ticket placed the coaching staff under intense scrutiny.

Madugu later apologised to Nigerians and accepted responsibility for the World Cup failure, pointing to missed chances and costly defensive errors.

The move now leaves the NFF with the task of rebuilding the technical structure of a team that has traditionally been Nigeria’s strongest representative in women’s football, while also finding a way to restore confidence after missing a World Cup for the first time.
