Peter Obi advocates competent leadership in Nigeria

Peter Obi: Nigeria Deserves Compassionate, Competent Leadership

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has stated that Nigeria needs capable, accountable, and competent leadership to unlock its immense human and natural resources and put the country on a path of sustainable development.

Obi revealed this in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, following his participation in a high-level roundtable discussion titled “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” hosted by the European Council on Foreign Relations at its Berlin, Germany, headquarters.

He stated the conversations centred on Nigeria’s democratic journey beyond 2027, development cooperation, foreign affairs, and ideas for building bilateral ties to boost economic growth.

The former governor of Anambra State applauded the attendees for their tremendous interest in Nigeria’s future.

Peter Obi emphasized that with good governance, Nigeria possesses the resources to become a successful and globally competitive nation. He noted that the event gathered policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, international organization officials, and global media representatives to discuss Nigeria’s future and its place in the world.

Additionally, Obi praised the European Council on Foreign Relations for inviting him to the event, describing such interactions as critical for enhancing international cooperation and forming long-term ties.

Backstory…

Peter Obi’s latest remarks come as he steps up his engagement with Nigerians ahead of the 2027 presidential election, where he has consistently presented himself as an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Since the 2023 polls, the former Anambra State governor has remained one of the country’s most prominent opposition figures, repeatedly criticising President Bola Tinubu’s handling of the economy, insecurity, unemployment and the rising cost of living. He has consistently argued that Nigeria’s challenges stem from poor leadership rather than a lack of resources.

In recent months, Obi has repeatedly stressed that Nigeria needs leaders who are both competent and compassionate, insisting that governance should prioritise the welfare of citizens over politics.
