Nigerian Navy Halts Illegal Refining Expansion and Recovers Stolen Crude in Rivers

In a decisive crackdown on economic sabotage, naval troops have dismantled a growing network of illegal refineries hidden deep in the Niger Delta backwaters. The successful Nigerian Navy crude oil theft operation took place across the Wakama/Bolo and Aworkiri communities in the Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Operatives attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny executed the targeted sweep under the ongoing Operation Delta Sentinel. During the mission, officers uncovered nine active illegal refining sites equipped with 23 dugout pits.

Eighteen of those pits contained an estimated 104,000 liters of crude oil. Furthermore, officers intercepted and neutralized five newly dug pits before operators could bring them online.

The Persistent Fight Against Niger Delta Oil Theft

To understand the weight of this strike, one must look at the history of oil theft in the Niger Delta. For decades, illegal refining has drained Nigeria’s national revenue while choking fragile creek ecosystems with toxic soot. Criminal networks frequently build hidden camps along remote waterways, tapping into trunklines to siphon raw petroleum.

Although security agencies regularly clear these camps, syndicates often return to rebuild their cooking pots and pits. Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, emphasized that this recent intervention specifically targeted expanding networks to break that cycle:

“The operation prevented the activation of new illegal refining locations. Through intelligence-driven operations, the Service continues to reduce the ability of criminal groups to rebuild their networks while safeguarding national economic assets.”

This proactive approach ensures that operators cannot establish fresh footholds along key riverine routes.

Equipment Recovered and Strategic Operational Impact

Beyond seizing liquid volume, naval personnel dismantled the primary infrastructure driving local production. During the sweep, troops confiscated eight locally fabricated refining pots along with three high-capacity storage tanks.

According to an official operational report published by Nairametrics, naval forces deactivated all recovered facilities in line with established anti-crude oil theft protocols.

The operation builds on broader maritime security gains across the region. Between April and June 2026, naval forces dismantled 48 illegal refineries and recovered over 4.69 million liters of stolen crude nationwide. These combined efforts helped national crude output reach 1.735 million barrels per day in mid-2026, marking 104 percent of Nigeria’s OPEC quota.

Looking Ahead in Coastal Security Enforcement

While the destruction of these nine camps represents a clear win, naval authorities remain vigilant. Operation Delta Sentinel continues to deploy intelligence-led patrols to monitor cleared creeks and track illegal logistics chains.

By cutting off illicit supply lines before new sites become fully operational, the Navy aims to permanently secure Nigeria’s vital energy infrastructure.
