Nigerian Stock Market Drops N1.17 Trillion as Investors Sell Key Shares

The local equities market experienced a sharp pullback after days of consistent gains. Investors stepped in to lock in recent profits across major blue-chip companies.

Consequently, the NGX market capitalization profit-taking drove total equity values down by N1.17 trillion in a single trading session.

Major Telco and Bank Lead NGX Market Capitalization Profit Taking

The downturn was primarily sparked by intense sell-offs in market heavyweights. Telecom giant MTN Nigeria Communications saw its share price drop by 4.73%, falling from N845 to N805. Financial giant First HoldCo also registered a 1.41% decline, while Dangote Sugar Refinery slid by 4.11%.

Reporting by Nairametrics confirms that the All-Share Index dropped by 1,806.18 points, or 0.73%, closing at 246,723.57. Meanwhile, overall market valuation settled at N159.26 trillion.

“The market expected a gradual moderation into a bullish trend,” noted analysts at Cowry Assets Management Limited. “However, persistent profit-taking activities may limit the pace of recovery and keep trading volatile in the short term.”

Backstory Behind the Recent Market Slide

To understand this sudden drop, one must examine the market’s recent performance. Over the preceding four sessions, Nigerian equities enjoyed a major rally, adding over N1.91 trillion on Monday alone. Driven by positive earnings reports and dividend announcements, stock valuations surged to near-record levels.

However, experienced institutional investors frequently sell off portions of their holdings following rapid price spikes to secure cash profits. This routine rebalancing created heavy selling pressure across the trading floor, quickly overmatching buying demand for large-cap equities.

Trading Volume Activity Spikes Despite Price Drop

Although the main index fell, overall market participation rose sharply. Total trading volume jumped by over 240%, with investors exchanging 3.91 billion shares worth N32.38 billion across 45,608 individual deals.

Fortis Global Insurance spearheaded trading activity, moving 3.29 billion units. Furthermore, overall market breadth remained surprisingly balanced, recording 27 gainers alongside 26 decliners. FTN Cocoa topped the performance chart with a 9.88% gain, while Thomas Wyatt Nigeria led the losers, shedding 9.97%.

Looking ahead, market experts view this adjustment as a natural cooling-off period rather than a structural decline. As corporate earnings season progresses, fundamental value will likely attract fresh capital back into local equities.
