The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast rain and thunderstorms across several parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.
NiMet said strong winds could precede thunderstorms in some areas in its weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday.
The agency forecast light rain and thunderstorms over parts of Taraba and Kebbi states on Monday morning.
Later in the day, NiMet expects isolated thunderstorms accompanied by significant rainfall across parts of the Northeast, Kaduna, Taraba and Kebbi states.
“For the North-Central region, thunder accompanied by light rain are expected over parts of Niger State during the morning hours.
“Later during the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are expected over most parts of the region,” it said.
On Monday morning, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecast cloudy skies across the southern region, with isolated thunders and light rain over parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.
NiMet also forecast thunderstorms and light rain across the region later in the afternoon or evening.
For Tuesday, the agency predicted light rain and thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, alongside cloudy conditions across the northern region in the morning.
It also forecast thunderstorms and light rain over most parts of the northern region later in the afternoon or evening. The agency said: “For the North-Central region, partly cloudy skies are expected during the morning hours.
“Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau States.”
Southern region forecast
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasted predominantly cloudy skies across the southern region on Tuesday morning, with light rain and thunderstorms expected in parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, and the South-South.
For Wednesday morning, NiMet predicted cloudy conditions throughout the southern region, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most areas later in the day.
The agency warned that strong gusts of wind may precede thunderstorms in areas expecting rain, advising residents to take necessary safety precautions.
“The public should take adequate precaution and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision,” NiMet warned.
NiMet urged homeowners to disconnect electrical appliances from wall outlets during thunderstorms and advised motorists against driving during heavy downpours.
To ensure effective operational planning, the agency also recommended that airline operators secure airport-specific weather forecasts and flight briefing documentation.

The latest predictions come months after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a flash-flood alert from July 1 to 10, 2026, warning that intensified rainfall at the onset of the peak rainy season could trigger flash flooding across 27 states.
According to the NiMet report, the heavy rainfall recorded across several parts of the country in June left the soil highly saturated, significantly reducing its capacity to absorb additional rainfall.
As a result, NiMet warned that low-lying communities, urban centres, coastal areas, and locations with poor drainage face a heightened risk of flooding in the coming days.
