NLC to Shut Down Nigeria: Nationwide Protest Slated for December 17 Over Escalating Insecurity
Despite a court judgement demanding the suspension of the industrial action, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its affiliate unions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to continue the ongoing strike by FCT Administration employees.

Benson Upah, the NLC’s acting general secretary, signed a circular dated January 27, 2026, which contained the directive.

The NLC stated that it was “reaffirming and reinforcing” its previous directives for workers to continue the strike action until their demands are completely realised in the circular sent to the presidents and general secretaries of all unions with headquarters in Abuja.

“We hereby reaffirm and reinforce the directive to all affiliate unions in the FCT to not only proceed with the ongoing action but to intensify and sustain it until all workers’ demands are fully addressed,” the circular reads.

“These violations are grave, unacceptable, and incompatible with the principles of fairness, justice, and decent work,” the NLC said.

“Affiliate unions are therefore directed to fully maintain participation in the industrial action; reinforce mobilisation of members for all congress-approved activities; and mobilise members to continuously participate in daily prayer and solidarity sessions from 8:00am to 5:00pm at designated venues across the FCT.”

The NLC cautioned against leaving the strike at this point, claiming that doing so would encourage more labour breaches.

“This struggle demands unity, discipline, and unwavering commitment. All affiliates are expected to comply strictly with this directive in the collective interest of the Nigerian working class. An injury to one is an injury to all,” the circular reads.

Workers employed by the FCTA were ordered to halt the strike by a national industrial court in Abuja on Tuesday.

FCTA and FCDA Workers Shut Down Abuja Government Offices in Indefinite Strike

The sitting judge, Emmanuel Subilim, ruled that although though the case at hand was a trade dispute, the defendants’ right to take industrial action was not unqualified.

He ruled that any ongoing strike must terminate while the issue is being decided whenever a disagreement has been referred to the national industrial court.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike stated on Tuesday that there will be repercussions for any striking FCTA employees who do not return to work after the court’s decision.
