Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) officially introduced the first group of participants for its 2026 Digital Journalism Training programme in the nation’s capital this week. According to the Voice of Nigeria, the announcement marks another significant step in the company’s long-standing commitment to strengthening media practice and storytelling across Nigeria.

The three-day training, running from January 19 to January 21, gathers journalists from key media outlets nationwide for an intensive skill-building course in digital reporting and modern communication. The initiative, known as Change Your Story (CYS), reflects NLNG’s effort to help media professionals adapt to a fast-moving digital media landscape.

Training Vision Aimed at Digital Excellence

This year’s edition carries the theme Re-calibrate, Create, Connect, highlighting the need for journalists to rethink storytelling techniques that resonate in today’s digital era. At the helm of the training is renowned media project leader Dan Mason, whose work spans journalistic development across Africa and beyond. Joining him as programme coordinator is Mr Taiwo Obe, founder of the Journalism Clinic, a respected trainer in media circles.

Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, Manager of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs at NLNG, explained that the CYS initiative is designed to equip media practitioners with practical tools and confidence for accurate, impactful reporting in a technology-driven environment. She said it shows NLNG’s commitment to enhancing the quality of journalism in Nigeria.

The training curriculum includes sessions on artificial intelligence in media, digital communication strategies, real-time reporting techniques, audience engagement, and fact verification. These elements aim to support journalists in delivering compelling and credible stories that meet global standards.

Journalists From Across the Country Selected

More than 27 journalists were chosen for the 2026 cohort, representing prominent newsrooms across Nigeria. Among the selected participants is Glory Ohagwu of the Voice of Nigeria, who will join others from print, online, television and radio platforms. This diversity of voices underlines the reach and influence of the programme.

NLNG introduced the Change Your Story programme over a decade ago as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility goals. Since its inception, the scheme has trained over 180 journalists, contributing to stronger media practice and deeper engagement with audiences.

The training is structured to be hands-on and immersive, offering media professionals the chance to interact directly with industry leaders and sharpen their skills through practical exercises. Organisers urged participants to approach the experience with dedication, emphasising that the knowledge gained will help transform how digital stories are told in Nigeria.

Strengthening Media in a Digital Age

The 2026 NLNG Digital Journalism Cohort comes at a time when digital literacy and smart reporting are increasingly critical in Nigeria’s media environment. With traditional and new media merging, journalists face growing pressures to produce verified, engaging content that keeps pace with global trends.

NLNG’s initiative aligns with broader efforts in the country to boost digital capacity and adapt storytelling to audience needs. As the media landscape evolves, programmes like CYS play a vital role in preparing professionals to use new tools and technologies responsibly and creatively.

For years, the NLNG Change Your Story programme has been recognised as a cornerstone of media excellence in Nigeria. Its growing reputation stems not just from the quality of content it produces but also from its consistent focus on ethical, accurate and impactful journalism that meets the demands of today’s news ecosystem.

As the participants begin their training in Abuja, industry watchers say the skills and insights gained here could ripple across the Nigerian media space, shaping how stories are researched, produced and presented in the digital age.
