Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a well-known Islamic cleric, has stated that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), would have been at the forefront advocating for his release if he had expressed regret.
Gumi made the declaration on Tuesday while making an appearance as a guest on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme.
His remarks were made just one week after Kanu was found guilty of all seven charges of terrorism and sentenced to life in prison by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Nnamdi Kanu, who had been bundled out of the court by the judge, was also convicted on all seven counts of terrorism filed against him by the federal government.
The IPOB leader was subsequently transferred to Sokoto Prison after his sentencing.
“If Nnamdi Kanu, who is in prison for terrorism and threatening to kill our soldiers, shows remorse and calls for peace, I will be at the forefront in calling for his pardoning and amnesty for him,” Gumi said.
