The actor’s family announced his death in a statement published on his verified Instagram account in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026. According to the family, Duru passed away following a brief illness. However, the statement did not disclose the nature of the illness.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the family said, while expressing appreciation for the prayers, love and understanding shown to them during the difficult period.

The announcement has brought sadness to Nollywood and the wider community of Nigerian film lovers, many of whom grew up watching Duru’s performances on screen.

The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, also confirmed the actor’s death in a tribute shared on the guild’s social media platform.

“Another great thespian is gone. Rest in peace, Francis Duru,” Yakubu wrote, acknowledging the loss of a respected figure in the industry.

Francis Duru’s Career and Contribution to Nollywood

Francis Duru was one of the familiar faces in Nigerian cinema, earning recognition for his ability to portray different characters across film and television productions.

He became widely known for playing Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the 1995 film produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe. The production remains an important title in the history of Nollywood, and Duru’s performance helped establish his place among the industry’s recognisable actors.

His career was not limited to one memorable role. Over the years, he featured in several productions and built a reputation as an experienced performer whose work reached audiences across different generations.

Duru also received recognition for his contribution to Nigerian filmmaking. In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

Beyond acting, he was recognised for his interest in youth development. He received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace honour in recognition of his positive influence on young people, according to available biographical accounts.

His long career reflected the contribution of performers who helped sustain Nollywood through its growth from an emerging film industry into a major source of African entertainment.
