Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, paid a visit to Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, the former military president, on Monday at his hilltop home in Minna, the capital of Niger State, amid new rumours that they were involved in manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Before heading straight to the elder statesman’s home, Obasanjo was greeted by protocol personnel from the Niger State Government House upon his arrival via the Ahmed Bola Tinubu International Airport in Minna.
The two former leaders met behind closed doors for almost thirty minutes, according to sources who spoke to Daily Trust. Obasanjo then went back to the airport.

According to sources, the visit might have something to do with the nation’s challenges and the impending general elections in 2027.
In recent times, former president Obasanjo has been in the news following rumours that he is involved in political manoeuvres intended to provide a ticket for Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to run for president and vice president of the coalition-led African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to the rumours, the proposed ticket will initially run against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the party’s presidential ticket. If it is successful, it will then launch a larger opposition effort against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 reelection campaign.
Some of these speculations have reiterated that Obasanjo is purportedly in charge of the arrangement, which also includes a backup plan for Obi and Kwankwaso to run on a different platform in the event that they are not granted an ADC ticket.
Additionally, it was believed that Babangida had pushed Kwankwaso to join the ADC instead of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), a move that commentators characterise as a component of a larger political strategy.

Both Obasanjo and Babangida have yet to make any formal comments on the speculations. However, their meeting on Monday has been interpreted in political circles as a further step in advancing these permutations.
