The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has called on voters to remain at their polling units after casting their ballots and follow the electoral process through to the collation centres to protect their votes.
The party made the appeal on Wednesday during the official flag-off of its campaign for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.
The PDP urged voters not to leave polling units immediately after voting, stressing the importance of staying behind to witness the counting and ensure that results are properly recorded and transmitted.
Speaking at the campaign launch, Chairman of the Campaign Committee and the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, expressed optimism that better days were ahead for residents.
Adebutu assured supporters that Nigerians would experience improved living conditions under the PDP, saying the party was committed to tackling poverty.
“I know the happy days are coming again in January. By the grace of God, the leader in Nigeria has asked me to say one prayer. The prayer is that we shall banish poverty,” he said.
He urged PDP supporters to remain loyal to the party and protect their votes during the election, while encouraging them to resist intimidation and stand firmly by their choices.
Also speaking, his running mate, Lateefat Sowunmi-Kolapo, urged voters not to allow fear or intimidation to prevent them from exercising their franchise.
“After voting, don’t say that you are done and leave. Cast your vote and stay at the polling unit. Stand by your vote and follow the process to the collation centre.
“Do not be intimidated. The vote belongs to the people, so let’s come out and exercise our franchise. May God give us victory. Vote for the PDP from top to bottom,” she stated.
Meanwhile, the party’s senatorial candidate, Iyabo Obasanjo, explained that her decision to return to the PDP after a brief stint with the All Progressives Congress (APC) was motivated by her desire to restore the senatorial district to its former position.
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, previously represented the senatorial district between 2007 and 2011.
She expressed concern that the progress recorded during her tenure had been lost under subsequent representatives, saying her return to the PDP was aimed at reclaiming the district’s lost gains.
“My desire to take our senatorial district back to where it was when I represented it is the reason I returned to the PDP to take up the challenge of restoring our lost glory,” she said.
It was reported that thousands of residents and PDP supporters took to the streets across the three federal constituencies in Ogun Central Senatorial District to show their support for the party’s candidates.
The supporters pledged to vote for the PDP in the 2027 elections and vowed to protect their ballots.
“We will vote for the PDP and stand by our votes,” many of them said.
