OPay Debunks Viral Shutdown Rumour, Tells Customers Not to Panic

Popular fintech company, OPay has dismissed a widely circulated online notice claiming that the company will stop operations on September 1, 2026, describing the information as false.

Opay

OPay is one of Nigeria’s most prominent fintech companies, but its roots in the country go beyond the OPay brand that Nigerians know today.

The company emerged in Nigeria in 2018, backed by Opera, the Norwegian technology company known for its web browser. OPay built its business around digital payments and financial inclusion, targeting Nigerians who had limited access to traditional banking services.

It initially operated as a mobile payments platform, allowing users to transfer money, pay bills and carry out other everyday transactions through their phones. It later expanded its ecosystem to include services such as savings, loans, merchant payments and its extensive network of POS agents.
