Residents of Owerri, the capital of Imo State, have stated that, despite police assurances of sufficient security, fear is the main reason they respected the May 30 Biafra Day sit-at-home order.
Some people who were spotted sitting within their compounds told our correspondent, that the main reason is their dread of unidentified gunmen who would take advantage of the Biafra day to attack.

One of the residents, who identified himself as Ferdinand Nzukoka, the owner of a barbeque saloon, claimed that criminal elements use the Biafra sit-at-home rule as a cover to loot goods and cash from individuals and occasionally cause harm to them.
He pointed out that there is a chance you might not return if you decide to go out for daily activities, or even if you do return, you will probably have some sort of event.
Nzukoka described an incident that happened to him on a day while he was sitting at home.
He clarified that despite the fact that there was nothing incriminating on him, he was confronted by some security guards who, after questioning him, labelled him an IPOB member. He added that he was however released after much suffering and pleading.
Another resident, Olukoma Njoku, who runs a restaurant, said that nobody likes to spend their days at home doing nothing and that every minute wasted is a loss of revenue.

She said “life is paramount and must be protected at any cost, even though sitting at home does no one any good but as far as life is involved let us sacrifice the day”.
She insisted that the agitators would no longer be able to impose the commemoration if the Federal Government took control of it by making the Biafra day a national holiday.
