Ismael Ahmed is named Executive Chairman of the CNG project by President Tinubu.
Barrister Ismael Ahmed has been named Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
On June 27, 2025, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, signed a statement announcing the appointment.
In his capacity as Executive Chairman, Ahmed will oversee the PCNGi’s operations and implementation, which is a component of the administration’s larger palliative intervention program.

Their attendance was necessary to address questions last week about an audit report that highlighted a startling N210 trillion that the business was reportedly unable to account for between 2017 and 2023.
Instead of showing up, the NNPCL wrote a letter that was read by the committee clerk and signed by Adedapo Segun on behalf of the GCEO.
Barrister Ismael Ahmed has been named Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The announcement partially stated, “Ahmed will oversee the presidential initiative’s operations, which aim to mitigate the consequences of eliminating fuel subsidies by providing more economical, accessible, and environmentally friendly energy alternatives.”
The PCNGi aims to hasten the country’s transition to compressed natural gas (CNG) as an economical and sustainable fuel.
The program is a component of the federal government’s larger plan to diversify Nigeria’s energy mix while reducing the financial strain that rising fuel prices are placing on individuals and businesses.

The appointee’s profile.
According to the announcement, Ahmed is 45 years old and has a strong background in public service, which he brings to his current position.
From 2018 to 2022, he served as the Senior Special Assistant to former President Muhammadu Buhari on the National Social Investment Programme, where he assisted in organizing and expanding welfare programs targeting the nation’s most disadvantaged citizens.
He was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 2006, following his graduation with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Abuja in 2005. He later graduated from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2008 with a master’s degree in international relations, communications, and diplomacy.

With a combination of legal expertise and policy experience, Ahmed is expected to provide strategic leadership for the PCNGi and support its goal of expanding access to cleaner, more affordable energy alternatives across Nigeria.
What you should know
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) was established in August 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of the government’s response to the removal of the petroleum subsidy. The initiative was designed to provide an alternative energy option that could help reduce the cost of transportation across the country.
- According to its original framework, the PCNGi aimed to promote the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) by facilitating vehicle conversions, supporting the deployment of CNG-powered buses and encouraging local assembly and manufacturing of conversion kits.
- The programme also included plans to create a nationwide network of technical workshops to provide CNG conversion and maintenance services in all states and geopolitical zones. In addition, it incorporated job creation through technical training and the onboarding of new personnel.

The initiative was also expected to introduce financing mechanisms for mass transit operators and offer incentives to attract investment in the development of CNG infrastructure, including processing, distribution, and after-sales services.
